Bluish screen tint (not BSOD)

Greeting fellow Windows 10 users,

A while ago I used to have a problem - upon finishing playing certain games in full-screen mode and exiting back to windows my screen would acquire a bluish tint and make me sad.

After searching for quite a while none of the solutions I found worked and I found out that by changing my screen's resolution the colours would go back to normal. Besides, someone has pointed out that it was a known issue and that it would be fixed with the Creator's update in a few month. Some half a year or more later the Creator's update did come out and fixed the bug.

Then a month ago or so the GDPR update came out and "fixed" the fix. Now whenever I exit certain games, disconnect my USB mouse or sometimes just randomly it acquires the bluish tint. And changing the resolution does not work any longer most of the times. What does work for me is logging out from the session, but it's hardly an ideal solution.

So does anyone has an idea how to fix it for good or should I just wait the next update and hope they'll fix it again.

Which version and build of Windows 10 are you using?

Windows key + R, type winver, enter

Have you tried updating your graphics driver? (Might also try older driver.)

Might help other members to respond if they knew more about system and graphics being used.

If this is desktop I think I would reseat graphics card if using and check power cables. I would also disconnect and reseat graphics cable both ends. Yes I saw this is intermittent and it reoccurred after an update.

While not a fix it might act as an easier work around to restart graphics

This can apparently happen on some displays, as discussed in this older TenForums thread: Laptop screen has blue tint. For that particular user, color calibration didn't help (but that's where I'd recommend you start looking for relief). Give us the make and model of your HP laptop and we'll see if we can help you find some useful tools.

You might also do a screen print and post it here. If the blueish tint is present on the forum Windows is generating, if not its hardware and you should invoke your warranty. Please ensure personal data is not included in screen shot.

Technology failure rates are high when gear is very new and very old.

I would also recommend starting a new thread.

Wref, there's a cumulative update (or two) that should bring your laptop up to 1803 Build 17134.137. Whether it will help with your problem, or not, I'm not sure. I do know that Microsoft recommends we let all updates install. It could be though, that there are newer graphics drivers with the cumulative update.

Go to Settings>Update & Security>Check for Updates and the update should show up for you.

First I would disable driver updates by Windows, Option 4 this tutorial

You will also have to check your Nvida software to make sure it does not do updating of drivers.


I would use DDU to completely remove Nvidia display drivers. Then I would install and older driver for your 820m. Do you know which one you were running. If not pick one around the release of 1709 (september 2017)

Of course I would perform the remaining updates as Wynona suggested.

Maybe Ed has more.

I've read about some cases where rolling back to older Nvidia or AMD drivers helps with certain older graphics adapters/chipsets. When you start digging into these kinds of situations, it's a trial-and-error thing: lots of attempts may be needed before the drivers become "just right!"
