Middle one asks about writing directly to drive I choose Ok but it fails. the bottom one when I click on it, all that happens is a flash of my screen.

Suggest: Open recording devices. (right click speaker icon)

For the problem device check Properties > Listen tab

Check settings there or post a screenshot.

Try turning down the volume down all the way instead of muting it.

The middle one is to be put in a PATH folder so it can be invoked readily.
Example: I put mine in C:\Windows
The bottom one is a special 'console' version (hence the c) - which you can ignore (see the help file).

To help you here are blow by blow instructions to demonstrate how this works.

    1. Extract Nircmd.exe from the zip file.
    2. Move it to C:\Windows
    - the following example arbitrarily uses Firefox.
    3. Launch Firefox.
    4. Open the volume control and note the volume is not muted.
    5. Open a Run box (Windows key + R).
    6. Copy this command into the Run box:
    nircmd muteappvolume Firefox.exe 1
    and execute it (hit Enter)
    7. Observe that Firefox volume control is now muted.
    8. Copy this command into the Run box:
    nircmd muteappvolume Firefox.exe 0
    and execute it (hit Enter)
    9. Observe that Firefox volume control is now unmuted.

    QED

To have this happen at startup, create a batch file (BAT) and and set it to run at startup.

    I attach an example.

Try changing that to playback through speakers or check other available options.
