Can't open some files in Documents

I think I have made a mess. I had a file called "password" in my document file, it was a "read only" file. There was another file called "passwords" out there too. It was not marked "read only" I have no idea how to make it not "read only" so I just renamed it. Now none of the files will open. I click it, the hour glass comes up, but it never opens. What can I do to fix this?
    Any help will be appreciated!

Is there an extension to that file ? Like password.txt for instance ?

First thing I would check is ... are the extensions set to show, or do they actually have no extensions

In file manager go to the View tab and set the checkbox if not already set

If there are no extensions on the files you can try to open them directly in Excel. or rename them by adding .xls or .xlsx to the name (notice the dot .)

If there are extensions present there may be a permissions issue as stated above or they may be corrupt, the simplest thing that could be an issue is the association between the .XLS (XLSX) has been lost - in this case the simplest way I know to solve this is to right click on one of the files and go to the Open With option and point this to Excel and set to "always open with this option" (never do this if there are no extensions as it will set all files without an extension to open with excel )

Unfortunately this didn't work. The extentions on these are ODS. I tried to restore my computer to a previous day when I knew they all worked but that didn't help either. Oh well, I may just have to rebuild them all. The most important one is all my passwords. That will take me forever!! Oh well - I'm retired, I have the time!

Do you by chance have LibreOffice installed? The .ods file format is used with LibreOffice Calc, comparable program to Excel.
