    After new update, search don't work (system restore, update)


    So I just completed the big spring update (didn't have any choice really) and now a whole bunch of stuff has changed with the new additions. One thing right away that's annoying me is when I type in the search box next to the start button, Windows can no longer seem to find apps to run. If I type system restore, it used to list it so I could launch it. Same for Windows update, etc.

    Now, it just does a web search which I don't even want it to do. If I type "system restore", it lists out a bunch of online search terms. If I click the left icon for "Find results in apps", it lists only 1 result - "search for apps in the Microsoft store" and if I click that, it runs an online search in the app store.

    Huh? What happened? Now it can't even find things on my PC. What happened? I did go through my privacy settings after the update to disable some stuff. Is there anything in there that could have done this? I don't see why it should.

    And how do I disable web search and app store search in the search box? I want it to search my PC only, not the web.

    Hi, is Windows search running? (Cortana is just a front end, and relies on Windows search indexing to find files).

    The search box in file explorer allows you to search your files, and also uses Windows search indexing.

    Have a look at Indexing Options (e.g. Windows key + R, Control; then click Indexing Options.
    Do you see something like this?

    Are there items indexed?

    To check search indexing, look at your indexed folders list. Add one item to one of those, wait a moment, and you should see the number increment. Does it?

    Try searching for something that is present in your Start Menu. And try searching for Mail. What results do you get?
    A screenshot would help.

    It is possible to disable web search in Cortana but it's not a simple setting. There was a recent thread about how to do this. MS basically doesn't want to give you the option.

    Note that using a start menu replacement can give a much more satisfactory experience.

    Clicking control panel then indexing options lists these:

    - Internet Explorer History
    - Start Menu
    - Users (Exclude AppData; AppData)

    That's it. I've always left indexing off and haven't had this problem until the update today.

    If I type some of my software into the search box, it's listed. But it won't find system restore or windows update. It does find task manager and some other random programs I type in that I have installed. I have no idea why it refuses to find some of the "apps" on my PC all of a sudden.

    As far as mail, I use web mail so I can't check mail.

    - er, that's not the objective. The objective is simply to discover the search result for the app Mail. It was a random choice. You could pick Alarms if you prefer.

    Oh, gotcha.

    Nope, it doesn't find mail. It just lists mail & calendar - "install app".

    I don't wish to experiment on mine with the effect of turning Windows search off. I seem to recall from a long time ago that searching Settings with Windows search off is very slow, or doesn't work.

    Given that you've upgraded, how many items are shown indexed?

    Note- there are no benefits of turning Windows search off that I know of. Back in XP days it was almost standard practise. There's really no reason to now.
