is windows ten good enough to upgrade from windows 8.1

hello folks i tried windows ten when it first came out and did not like it to many issues with crashing etc.. right now i am 8.1 , but want to know if ten has gotten better since it first came out, or would i be better sticking with windows 8.1, or better yet downgrade to windows 7.. i have had people tell me windows sucks and loaded with issues still but rather ask you folks on the ten forums who use it daily.. i know i will get a more honest answer here..

Well, I have upgraded 2 of 3 computers from 7 then to 8.1 and now 10 all Pro version. My current notebook came with 10 I upgraded to Pro.
My older G75VW I did not upgrade past 8.1 there were and are hardware issues there, of course, are workarounds for most but, I decided it wasn't worth the effort to upgrade it to 10, my sister continues using it on 8.1.
My wife's HP All In One is still on 8.1, I'm pretty sure it would work on 10 pro ok but, My wife isn't interested in learning a new OS and only does facebook and email.

So what you need to decide is your hardware compliant? if not are there workarounds? Is it worth the effort or challenge however you look at it? Sooner or later everyone will have to be on 10 regardless or some other OS besides Windows.

I personally like it better than 8.1. I have to qualify that with the fact that I use Classic Shell so my desktop is pretty much the same as it was with Windows 7, we also use Classic Shell on our 8.1 computers.

It now appears that Classic Shell is not going to work with windows 10 for very much longer so that has to be taken into consideration if you're using it.

If you decided to upgrade I would ensure my OS was in top condition run the DSIM Tools and chkdsk before trying the upgraded
Make sure all your hardware drivers are upgraded the latest. Don't forget to create the Disk/SSD Image so you'll have something to go back to should you have a failure or change your mind. Download and create your install USB from MCT

Run these from CMD prompt Admin.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
SFC /scannow
chkdsk C: /f

I have several rehabbed Notebooks I've upgraded from Win7 w/SP1 or Win8.1 which were the requirements of the original 1-year GWX/Get Windows 10 that are working fine, even a couple that were WinVista I first upgraded to Win7 then to Win10. Also have 3 SFF Desktops I took from Win7 w/SP1 to Win10.

Each to his own taste and each to his own preference.
If you have no complaint and you are satisfied with your Win 8.1, stay with it. No need to switch just because Win 10 is the current OS for Windows users.

As to Win 10, there are users having little to no issues with it, and then there are users appear to be troubled by it.

I have 5 computers running either Win 10 Home or Win 10 Pro. I have no issue.

Forgive me for splitting hair...…. is your Win 8.1 good enough to upgrade to Win 10 ?

I have W10 working fine on all PCs including a 2006 vintage AMD based PC. Beware of the main feature updates every April and October which can be buggy. I prefer to defer these for at least 3 months.

There is no problem staying on W8.1 but eventually it will not be supported and you will receive no security updates - see https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...ndows-products

Mainstream support has already ended and all support will end in 2023.

Thank you everyone for your input , I am going to give windows 10 a try again, sounds like I will by the pro version to have some control over the updates.. I heard classic she'll no longer works with ten, so I will just have to get used to the start menu with out it.. also I will be installing it on a 512gb SSD.. so and use my 750hdd as the storage/data drive.. I am no gonna read up in the install section of this forum and performance section to make sure I install it correct and get the best performance out of it.. I will report back here once I have it installed and let ya know how I like it..

That's the key question. If your base OS has issues, then you aren't giving Windows 10 a great platform to run on. For me, I'd rather spend the 2-3 hours doing a clean install, unless I'm absolutely sure the system is in perfect working order.

Check the above articles and google for others. There may, repeat may, be a way you can still upgrade for free. If you have a license for the Pro 8.1 it may, again may, be valid.
