Start menu icons disappear
Some-to-most of my start menu icons keep disappearing. There's still a box there and if I hover over it, it will identify, and I can open the program by clicking on it. But the icon itself is gone.

Hello Nililet,
You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.
Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
It seems to have worked, except for one oddity, Now the Google Photos Backup icon is so tiny you can't even tell what it is. I can llve with that, but wonder why it happened.
That is a relatively new feature in that one can put more tiles in 1 tile, I had one with 4 such tiles in it. It usually works to click a tiny tile and it will reposition to original but on mine that's when it is in Life at a Glance. I can then drag individual tiles up above that section. Then when that tile is blank/empty it disappears.
Nikilet,
I'm glad to hear the icon on the Tile is back to normal.
This is indeed the "Live Folders" feature Berton posted.
The tutorial below can help show you more on how to add and remove them.
Create and Use Live Folders on Start in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
Thanks for that Live Folders tip and link. I don't know for sure if I like it, but if I get too many start items it could help.
Sorry, but I guess this process didn't fix things (per screenshot), so now I should go on to the final step which is:
4. If the icons are still not displaying properly after rebuilding the icon cache, then download and merge the .reg file for the .ico(ICO) option here to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files in Windows 10.
That download states it is for Windows 8 and 8.1, so does the file also work for Windows 10?
I've updated the tutorial for a W10 version of the download for .ico, but I don't think that will help for this situation.
Have you already tried unpinning and repining the app to see if that may have its icon show properly?
Brink: Yes, I have tried un- and re-pinning the apps. Last night I did the two shown in my SS, and so far they have stuck.
