Win10 upgrade and a retail purchase of Win10 Pro- not the same.

I am really disappointed. I have an older laptop that had Windows 7 on it and no key for any version of windows stored in bios. I purchased an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, then got the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro. I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro for free. Then, because I like to have a clean system, I deleted all the partitions on the hard drive, booted from a DVD made from the Windows 10 upgrade ISO, and did a clean install. SLMGR /DLV shows a Windows Pro Edition, RETAIL channel and SLMGR /XPR shows an activated Windows Pro with a permanent activation and system information under control panel says Windows 10 Pro. Now, according to Mr. Pombrio in the OP, I only have "an update patch on top of Windows 8.1 to make it look like Win10. Lets call it Win8.1++. "

Mr. Pombrio, can you please tell me what I would gain if I purchased a retail license for Windows 10 Pro?

quoted from windows 10 blog from microsoft themselves you can see thee whole blog here. Introducing Windows 10 Editions | Blogging Windows Notice it says full version not a patch to make it look like it is it.

As we announced earlier this year, for the first time ever, we are offering the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro as a free and easy upgrade for qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year after launch.**Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

The confusion that most people are having is what they are getting with the Win10 upgrade. Too many people are assuming that MS is giving away free copies of retail Windows 10. That is simply not the case. MS is letting Win8.1 users patch their Win8.1 computer to make it run a a copy of Win10 with very limited rights. If you want all the rights that a retail version has, you need to BUY a copy of the full retail Win10 Pro product. Don't confuse the two, they are completely different in what you can do with them. From another of my posts:

Think of the Win10 upgrade as simply an update patch on top of Windows 8.1 to make it look like Win10. Lets call it Win8.1++. Don't think of it as a completely new install of Win10 because it isn't! It only has a generic product key and it does not have a way of doing a clean install by just using a Win7/Win 8.1 product key on a new computer. You do have the ability to do a clean install of Win10 on the upgraded computer, but only on that upgraded computer. Like any other retail copy of Win8.1 that you want to move to a new computer, you first have to do a clean install of Win8.1 then run updates on it including the one to make it LOOK LIKE Win10 (Win8.1++). Of course, you need to wipe the old copy of Win8.1++ off of the original machine as well. Simple enough. Oh, and you only have a year to play with it before the win10 update patch for Win8.1 that turns it into Win8.1++ goes away so no more transfers to a new computer after that (unless MS once again changes the rules or make exceptions).

If you want a real, complete retail version of Windows 10 with all its rights and privileges including the ability for a clean install on a new computer, then you have to buy Windows 10 Pro for $199 which will give you a unique, valid Windows 10 product key.
Can you please tell us exactly which are the features that are not available to us Windows 8.1++ users?

To be honest I fin your entire post hard to believe unless I find some kind of a conformation.

We are just trying to get the OP to substantiate his statements (which he won't be a able to do because they are completely erroneous) or at least admit that he was completely wrong.

Yes i agree unless he can bring out fact which i doubt he can , microsoft own blog says we all have the full version of win 10 when we get it, therefore it would be taking MS to tell us we have 8+++ which we do not we all have win 10 and that's what it is.

Thanks everyone. I really messed up the original post, and badly. But the nice thing is that I learned a lot from the posts! Heh. I added edits to my original post but added edits to correct the mistakes that I made so that your comments could still be valid. It should be closer to what is really going on now. Let me know if I still have some parts wrong.

"I no longer have an MSDM table in my UEFI BIOS " because you erased it? That statement confuses me? You had one but now you don't?
Frankly, that surprised me a lot when I went to look up my MSDM a few days ago. Here is what I found:

Win10 upgrade and a retail purchase of Win10 Pro- not the same.-2015-08-03_030439.jpg

No MSDM anymore. I just bought a new mobo a couple of months ago but used my SSD already loaded with Win10 insiders preview. It booted right up and activated. Did MS do a hash on my ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 with a i7-4790K chip and decide to keep it? Since I never loaded in Win8.1 on the machine (I simply did not have to), perhaps that is why there is no MSDM table. Got me, but as you can see, it isn't there like it was on my old mobo.

Not every motherboard is going to have an embedded key by the way. If you buy a motherboard by itself like that it won't. It's only if its sold in a system by an OEM like Dell or ASUS etc. They modify it adding the Windows Product code etc. If every motherboard sold came with an embedded key you'd be getting Windows free with it. That motherboard never had the MSDM table to begin with. Microsoft isn't going to add or remove that type of info to your BIOS. For one thing it proprietary to the OEM. They'd never get permission to do it. Plus they don't want to be on the hook if what they did bricked your motherboard. That info isn't easily changed. I can flash the BIOS on my ASUS laptop and that section with the product code is untouched.
