    Out of memory problems

    I am again getting problems with my 4 GB Ram TabletPC which is being brought to a halt frequently by 'out of memory' problems. Mostly it happens when browsing, usually with Opera. Sometimes it occurs right at the start with only one tab in use when trying to play a YouTube video for example, not just after extensive browser activity which would makes more sense to me.

    When it is not happening I think the device works well, I can have a dozen tabs in use without trouble, not that I often do.

    It also happened for a while some months ago. As before I can get a small amount of temporary benefit using a couple of memory cleaner apps, despite some 'experts' insisting they are totally useless, which I find is not true. But it is only a brief respite, perhaps providing enough time to get to the end of the a short video, or to close down before a crash. I also shut memory hogs with Task Managers but unfortunately they are almost always Norton Antivirus, and Malwarebytes, the very last programs I want to close when online.

    Is there any way I can deal with this?

    I don't use Opera, but browsers in general like to consume what they can of memory, unless you tame them down. Take a look at this, and see if you can implement it.

    Memory is used for 2 things, one is the RAM/Random Access Memory, in your case the 4GB. The other is Storage on a drive/device in the computer. The terms of measurement are the same, MB-MegaByte, GB-GigaByte, TB-TeraByte.

    What is the capacity of the HDD or SSD? HDD = Hard Disk Drive SSD = Solid State Drive
    Many tablets have only a 32GB drive and it can fill up quickly, especially with Temporary files. I press the Windows key along with R, type %temp% then delete the files in that Folder but a few won't as they are in use. Maybe Disk Cleanup is necessary.

    I would start by removing Norton Antivirus and Malwarebytes and any other anti-this and anti-that program and use Windows Defender. Many members here have not run anything but WIndows Defender for years without any virus or malware issues.

    SSD capacity is 46 GB nominal, free space is 28% 14 GB , a little better than usual as it often falls to 10 / 12 GB. I continually clean junk, several times a day, with a number of effective cleaners plus DiskClean.

    I have subscribed to Norton and Malwarebytes for years. I am advised they are a good combination and rated significantly better than Defender in ComputerActive. How easy would it be to just try turning them off temporarily and Defender on temporarily when about to watch video online?

    I will check the Opera link.

    @clayto

    I pointed to the Opera link because of how you phrased your original issue.

    Mostly it happens when browsing, usually with Opera.

    While disabling or uninstalling programs will certainly prevent them from consuming memory (RAM), it would leave more for any memory hungry app to consume, i.e. your Opera browser.

    Flipping your AV protection off/on to watch a vid seems unnecessary and possibly error prone.
