Picture extensions not recognized in Windows 10

Okay after installing some stuff into my computer, and messing up my pictures registry, and trying out Regedit exe,
my Windows 10 no longer recognizes pictures for what they are, instead i get this message

Picture extensions not recognized in Windows 10-error-1.png Picture extensions not recognized in Windows 10-error-2.png

I thought at first this was a issue with GIMP2. when i tried to drag and drop in a jpeg, id get some error message from Gimp2 itself.

But my efforts to further fix this has made it worse.

Try using a restore point if you have System Restore enabled, and a recent restore point available.

What image viewer are you using? If you use something other than the built-in one ... just reinstalling it might do the trick.

Not really- why do you think so? This is the sort of debacle system restore is there for... provided it works.
You can try system restore without waiting for a response and trying various things.

How long does it take your PC to restart?

@margrave55 - we don't know what may have been done to the registry given the post content... better to try to get back to a stable state than potentially fix a range of issues. Quite what's been going on is unclear. Hence my straightforward approach.

i installed a infran viewer , and some others portable image viewer , before this all got messed up, i installed riot image size reducer
    . its just a mess.
I dont want to do a system restore, because it will restore back into issues, and ill lose important chrome extensions and such .
I also lost regular windows image viewer and then i went online to get a registry install. which is when things really got bad.

Shouldn't be, but using system restore if you have a restore point and it works is going to be so much easier than trying to address a series of individual problems arising from a variety of actions.... and perhaps not identifying all the problems created. Whereas using a restore point would take you back to a point where you can more easily redo actions like installing a program.

For example, I don't know what
i went online to get a registry install
    means, I'm afraid.

Note: we constantly urge users to routinely use disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) so they can quite quickly restore their PC to a previous working state- even after ransomware or their disk fails. Bad things can happen...

    Hello John,

If you haven't already, you might see if resetting the "Photos" app may allow it to open afterwards.
