Search bar not responding to typed input after 6/12/18 Windows Update

I did the 06/12/18 Windows Update (Windows 10 Home 64 bit), and now the search bar doesn't respond to any typed input. I type in the first few letters, and the search/Cortana window just closes on me and the Search bar is blank. Cannot open apps or do any searching via the bar.

    Any suggestions, please?

Hi, as everyone does not receive the exact same update or upgrade on the same day, or even have the same major build, could you look at your Update History and clarify to which update or upgrade you're referring?

    And quote your current build
    (Windows key+ R, winver)

Does your Start Menu work? (You say you can't launch apps).

Thanks, Dalchina, for the quick response.

    I have Win 10 Version 1803, Build 17134.112.
The following were installed earlier today: KB4284835 and KB890830.
After these two updates, I can launch apps, but not from the search bar. I cannot search for anything from the search bar.

I have the same Version and Build, Search works fine. I put in Control and the first item is Control Panel, click and it opens.

Working fine here as well. Apps, programs and files all found correctly as soon as I begin typing.

Hi, whilst it may be it's not an update-related bug (you can check the News section for each of those updates and comments following) there are plenty of threads about problems with search from the taskbar 'Cortana search'.

Feel free to search the forum for other ideas- not one I've dealt with on 1803- and I'm not going to use 1803 for some time yet.

I failed to note I have Cortana not showing, just the 'magnifier' icon. Right-click Cortana or Search then click Search for choices.

I got it resolved, but not with any of the suggested methods!

Many of those methods resolve issues with file search, as opposed to issues with windows 10's Search bar. My file search was working, but I had trouble searching from Start or opening apps. For example, to open Excel 2016, I usually just type "Excel" in the Search bar, and click on the app in the list. As I don't have Excel on my desktop, I now had no way of opening Excel other that to click on an existing Excel file.

    So I rebuilt the index.

Then, from Settings, I did Search & Cortana Troubleshooting. It found no issues.

I could not not do sfc /scannow because it required getting an elevated command prompt, which I only know how to do through the Search bar.

Then I thought of comparing my Services to a saved list of Services as they had been before, and lo and behold, some of the Services had been inexplicably changed. I made the following changes, restarted, and all is good now:

    • Connected Devices Platform Service, changed back from Disabled to Automatic (Delayed Start)
    • Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, changed back from Manual to Automatic
    • Diagnostic Policy Service, changed back from Manual to Automatic
    • Distributed Link Tracking Client, changed back from Manual to Automatic
    • IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules, changed back from Manual to Automatic
    • Intel(R) Dynamic Application Loader Host Interface Service, changed back from Disabled to Automatic (Delayed Start)
    • Smart Card, changed back from Disabled to Manual
    • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), changed back from Manual to Automatic
    • Windows Push Notifications System Service, changed back from Manual to Automatic.

I don't know whether it was necessary to change all of them, or just some, but it does work now!

Glad you resolved it. Problem with that sort of thing is there can be multiple causes, so it can be guesswork.

    For reference:
One way to launch a command prompt as admin when things are difficult:
Hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to launch task manager.
    File, Run new task
Select 'Create this task with admin....'
    cmd <Return>

To reset services to default:'s cautious free tool includes this is as one of the repair options.

    Thank you!

Thanks, Dalchina, for those tips. I've made a note of them.

Unfortunately, my task manager's File options are "Run new task" or "Exit". There is nothing for "Run new task as administrator".
