Start menu typing search doesn't work

I thought I could just type "rege" and get Regedit result right away. No. I need to type the whole name.
What's going on? The Windows Search service is running.

I disabled Cortana, but that shouldn't matter, should it?

It's 'interesting'. I have a program - a great free registry editor (try it) called O&O Regedit.

    rege finds that.
But as you say, only regedit finds MS's regedit.exe

Now regedit does not appear in the Start Menu. (But O&O Regedit does).

But if you add a shortcut to it in the Start Menu, and allow indexing to update, then guess what- rege finds it. QED.
