How to hide all windows at once = show desktop with icons only?

Assume I have multiple windows open (browser, WinExplorer, Word,...).

Is there a way to hide all these windows at once to show only desktop, then double click on one of the icons on desktop to start another prgm and finally re-show the previously hidden windows again?

Well as you may know the sequence would be
    Windows key + D
    - d click the shortcut
    Windows key + D

You could do that with a simple Autohotkey (free) script - perhaps about 4 lines + comments.

But if you simply wished to launch the program.. why not allocate a hot key to its shortcut?

    Hello Peter,

In addition, you can press the Peek button to the right of the Action Center icon on the taskbar to toggle to hide/show all windows.

I don't know if this: Boss key - Wikipedia still works but was popular a while ago.

    Hi,

My favorite method right now is to click task view > new desktop. Leave the 2nd desktop blank to use as a boss desktop. Then to switch to it quickly, press ctrl+win+right arrow key. To switch back: ctrl+win+left arrow. Would that work for you?

I like the Peek/Show Desktop toggling feature but in use with the open programs minimized to view desktop icons opening another item keeps them minimized, have to restore by clicking each in the Taskbar.

In tablet mode I am trying to show the desktop icons.

I cannot discover how to effectively right click the desktop without using a keyboard.

    Suggestions are welcome.

I want to turn on view desktop icons but my attached keyboard is damaged and if possible I want to do it without reverting to one of the on screen keyboards although I would not know how to do that with an on screen keyboard, so if you have suggestions about that they are also welcome. Thank you.

    Hello Andrew,

To right click on a touch screen, you would press and hold on the screen until you see a translucent square, then release to see the context menu.

That was what I thought and could not understand why the desktop screen seemed "dead" Having since restarted it, it is working properly again now. Maybe I should have rebooted before asking the question, but thanks very much for the response confirming what I had thought should happen.
