    Resetting user folder folder icons

    My desktop folder in my user folder has changed itself to a plain ugly one. How can I set this back to how it should be?Attachment 191118

    Hello,

    Did you move your Desktop folder?

    If you like, you can use step 4 in Option Two below to restore the default location of your Desktop folder, and hopefully also restore its icon.

    As a guess, you've lost or changed desktop.ini, a hidden file in the folder.

    Enable viewing it by disabling Hide protected operating system files

    This is what mine contains: - note the IconResource line.

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183
    [LocalizedFileNames]
    Snipping Tool.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\SnippingTool.exe,-15051
    Internet Explorer.lnk=@%windir%\System32\ie4uinit.exe,-731
    Notepad.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-22051

    Remember to hide protected operating system files again

    Mine has the same as that but I don't have the LocalizedFileNames bit.

    What I find odd is it looks fine in these other two places.Attachment 191120

    But that reg file worked. Thanks!

    Have you tried refreshing your icon cache?

    My desktop.ini there looks like

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

    Since the location of your Desktop folder hasn't been changed, you could try downloading and merging the .reg file below to restore the default registry entries for this folder including the icon.

    Default_Desktop.reg
