Windows 10 won't start after changes to Start-up.

    Hi,

    I have a Dell Latitude 3460, Intel-core i3, 8gb ram with 64-bit Windows 10.

I made a big mistake editing some start-up features of Windows 10, in order to make it run faster. Now, Windows 10 won't start.

On startup, it hangs forever, then a blue screen with Dell showing there's a problem, attempts to repair, to no avail. I choose the restore point option and it restores to a previous point, but when I restart, I get the same problem. There are other options to solve the problem, such as UEFI Firmware settings, Command Prompt etc. but I require some assistance to go into that.

I want to know if there is anything I can do to solve the problem, or do I have to re-install Windows 10. It is a store bought PC, I don't have the installation disc.

I did the following that caused the problem.:

    1. System Configuration > Boot > changed timeout to 15 seconds
    2. System Configuration > Boot > Advanced options > ticked Maximum Memory box
    3. Disabled Fast-Boot: Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the Power Buttons do > I unticked the Turn On Fast Startup box
    4. Adjusted the Virtual Memory settings: Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change > I unticked Automatic Manage Paging File Size > I chose Custom Size and altered the Initial Size (1.5 x 8gb ram ) Maximum Size (3 x 8gb ram).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, not obvious there what would cause the PC to fail to boot, although fiddling with paging is not advised.

Odd that system restore doesn't fix that. Given that you've tried that, suggesting you restore the backup copy of the registry is unlikely to work.

Noting that you mention attempts to repair (by which I assume you mean Windows automatic startup repair), you could try Macrium Reflect's Fixboot tool.

You can do that by downloading and creating Kyhi's boot disk, available from the top of the Software and Apps section here, booting your PC from that, running Macrium R (on the disk) and then run the Fixboot tool.

Note that Win 10 iso's are freely downloadable - instructions in a tutorial in the Tutorial section e.g. which you can browse and search. That also includes a tutorial on creating bootable disks.

Unsure about Fixboot? Feel free to research it.

It's unlikely any of those have caused that problem of not booting. Must be more to it.

The specs in the "My Computer" section displayed 4 GB RAM and the opening post displayed 8 GB RAM
When was the additional 4 GB RAM added?
Does it match or does it not match the initial 4 GB RAM (same SKU)?
If not the identical SKU then remove the additional 4 GB RAM and see if the computer boots.

    1) See if you can use the hardware method to boot into safe mode:
    2) Power on the notebook and as soon as you see the Microsoft icon > power off
    3) Power on again and as soon as you see the Microsoft icon > power off
    4) Power on again and allow the progression to the computer's Windows advanced troubleshooting menu
    5) Click troubleshoot
    6) Click startup options (not startup repair) > click restart > select safe mode with networking
    7) Run the DM log collector and the BETA log collector (extract > open)

That's great that you were able to reset.
    You are welcome.

Make a backup image using Macrium.
    They have a free version.

If there are problems in the future you should have a method to save files or fix boot problems.
