Please try to distinguish between updates and upgrades.
This is what you'll see by pressing Windows key and R then typing winver:Click image for larger version.

The Version number is bigger than the previous version so traditionally that's always been an Upgrade. The Build number is akin to the Service Pack of previous versions of Windows, Win7 back to WinXP, they are improvements for various issues, some minor, some for security, etc., that may not warrant a version Upgrade. It must be kept in mind that some changes may affect other parts of the OS, if so Microsoft needs feedback about it.

A friend and I are duly aware and a little anxious about 1803. (She doesn't want to turn her PC on..).
Disable your network, "it's the only way to be sure".

After the 1709 fiascos, I isolated my W10 Home 1703 laptop and W10 Pro 1703 VM from our network.
Unsurprisingly, since MS can't get at them, they've both run very smoothly.

Maybe you should consider a dual boot setup.

My laptop is a dual boot setup (W10 Home, Linux Mint 18.3).
My W10 Pro VM runs in VMware Player on Linux Mint 18.3 (it won't run in VMware Workstation 9 on W7).

The bottom line is, if I need to access the Internet/LAN I can use LM.

You are right about opinions but add in experiences. Mine started in late '94 after I retired then got a job in a shop building computers.

That's nice! You do know what you're doing with PCs and your opinion is fully respectable.
But please, allow me to have a different opinion, even if I'm not a technician, even also if I'm not an old ('87) user. I think the issue, here in this topic, is not exactly technical.

Did you spend any money for Windows 10? I didn't. Don't know anyone who has, either. You are always free to ask for a refund.

The thing that gets me, as someone who supports all OSes in the corporate setting, what Microsoft is doing with Windows is very much the same that Apple is doing with OSX and the Linux community has been doing for years. Linux is in a constant state of beta. Apple has plenty of issues on a closed system, where they control the software AND the hardware.

Please stop putting down the people who are defending Windows. We don't need this forum denigrate down to a bunch of know-it-alls spewing incorrect, inexperienced drivel to anyone who disagrees with them. A very small amount of experience and critical thinking will show you why there may be some small issues with any new version. Compare the variations of hardware and software configurations in the Windows world to what Apple has to account for. It's common sense. Even in this thread, in the original rant, you can see examples of how Microsoft wasn't to blame, but yet they'll be the target of rage.

Are the issues frustrating? Sure. But they are much easier to resolve in the Windows arena than your other options.

So, you come from a pirated OS and we do not speak about piracy here. No, I'm joking, just like you.

    I apologize, Deacon.
When I said that 1803 fubarred my audio settings ... I lied.
When I said that 1803 fubarred my sound ... I lied.
When I said that 1803 broke Sandboxie ... I lied.
When I said that 1803 broked AVG ... I lied.
When I said that 1803 disabled my games ... I lied.

The truth is ... Windows 1803 is wonderful ... because I like defects!

I bought most of my copies of Windows 10. When I bought my OEM desktop and laptop the cost of Windows 10 10 was included in the price. MS didn't give it to me for free. When I bought my Pro keys from Newegg I had to pay. I got one copy of Windows 10 Pro that was totally free and that was when MS first began the Insider Program you didn't need a key from a earlier version of Windows.

The average user that only knows enough about computers to turn it on and off love it when a forced update gives them hours and hours of nothing but a screen with spinning dots.
