    Hey perdrix,
Might be a long shot, but check Windows Services for Connect Devices Platform Service and Connected Devices Platform Users and make sure they are running and startup type is Automatic.

    Note:
    1. MS was never clear what those two services were for ... so I had them disabled.
    2. Settings > Privacy > Activity History didn't work either and would just close/crash settings.
    3. Once I re-enable those two services, both Task View and Activity History started working.

But when I press the Task View button, *nothing* happens except the Icon changing, so I don't get the time-line

I had the same problem and was able to resolve it. I'm on Windows 10 Professional. The root of my problem was VLC Media Player. As soon as I closed the application, Task view was functional once again. Even with VLC Media Player not being the focused window, it wouldn't allow Task view while running. I can recreate the problem consistently by reopening VLC. Still trying to track down if there's a setting in the preferences that forces this behavior.

If VLC Media player isn't operational and you're still having the problem, have you checked other applications or background processes? There could be other applications for Windows that behave the same way.
