Windows 10 start up problem - Windows rollback option

Sorry about the title - not sure what to call it.

    Hi.

My daughter's computer has recently had a Win10 update and now is unable to boot to Windows.

It starts by asking which keyboard layout it is and then runs up a blue screen which looks similar to the 'safe start' screen, blue with different options in boxes, one of which is start Windows rollback (or words to that effect). Others include the problem solving option. In every single case, the computer will only restart and follow the same routine.

The system was originally Windows 7, but several years ago.

Not sure what other info might be useful.

Assuming you are referring to the upgrade to build 1803, post #9 may be relevant.

You can check your build number by examining the properties of explorer.exe for example, if necessary by booting your PC from a boot disk such as Kyhi's, available from the top of the software and apps section here.

Sorry. I should have got back here sooner, but my daughter's wedding took more time than I expected.

After playing with it for a while (her computer), it starts to boot up and gets to the 'Welcome' screen, but seems to halt there. Two error messages appear: 'ctfmon.exe - Success' : Unknown Hard Error; and 'sihost.exe - System Warning' : Unknown Hard Error. The 'Welcome' indicator cycles for around 20 minutes and then the screen goes black. The mouse is still active, and pressing the power button shuts the computer down 'normally', i.e. 'Shutting Down'.

I did get into the cmd prompt through safe boot, and tried chkdsk. It suggested that the HDD had problems. However, trying to correct it using /f revealed the HDD was write protected.

Through cmd, the version is 10.0.17134.1

Any ideas? What other info do I need to give?

That set of symptoms is one possible bad outcome following the upgrade to 1803.
    See e.g.
    Sihost.exe and explorer.exe : Unknown Hard Error - Windows 10 Forums
    (not solved)

    For more hopeful info see:

Note: Backups are essential. Hope you have that. Also in the anticipation of bad outcomes such as this- even ransomware or disk failure-we constantly recommend the routine use of disk imaging (Macrium Reflect (free) + large external storage - which allows recovery fairly quickly without technical support.

    Good luck!
