Ubuntu Large Taskbar Button Icon Broken on Windows 10 update 1803

    To All,

This morning, when I booted my PC, the Ubuntu large taskbar button icon became broken. I am running Windows 10 update 1803. Instead of showing the former nice orange and white icon, it shows an ugly looking, corrupted icon. When I turn on "Use small taskbar buttons" the icon looks nice again. I do not use the small taskbar buttons. Unpinning and then re-pinning Ubuntu does not work. I have tried this a few times. Rebooting does not work. I have tried this a few times too. Other large taskbar button icons look OK. When new start menu programs are pinned to the taskbar, their large button icons look OK. How to I fix this problem?

    Thank you

i noticed i lost my ubuntu icon in my right click context menu as well. Its now a blank icon.

I checked the old location it resided in the windowsapps folder and it seems the .ico file is just gone. Found your post in an effort to fix it.

    The solution is:

'Pin to taskbar' and 'Unpin from taskbar' Apps in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

    See option 4.

Start -> Ubuntu (or Bash on Ubuntu on Windows) -> right click on expanded running Ubuntu in task bar -> pin to taskbar -> icon is now OK

This worked while other varions such as Start -> Ubuntu -> right click -> more -> Pin to taskbar - only resulted in bad icon.

Note that to play is safe, i also cleaned up my icon cache before doing the above. See: How to Rebuild a Broken Icon Cache in Windows 10

I had to grab another icon from another computer. If that is not an option for you than you can grab one from the web.

Also, along the way, I also got this when starting Ubuntu bash:

Installing, this may take a few minutes...
    WslRegisterDistribution failed with error: 0x800703fa
Error: 0x800703fa Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.

    Press any key to continue...

If I started it as an administrator, I did not get this message. A Google of "WslRegisterDistribution failed with error: 0x800703fa" showed others getting the same error message.

    This was the solution
Start -> Ubuntu -> App Settings -> Repair

This fixed the above error message and Ubuntu bash worked but then the taskbar button icon became invisible.
