    Stuck at Spinning Dots


    I have a Dell Precision 7910 on windows 10 1803. I updated a couple weeks ago through windows update.

    I have booted the machine several times since updating. A few days ago I update the NVIDIA driver. I have dual K620 cards. Booted a couple of times sine that update.

    Today I went to reboot. On boot, it was stuck on spinning dots. I only waited around 20 minutes before I powered off. Booted again, same thing.

    I powered off and pressed F8 trying to get to Safe Mode. However, it now stated starting Automatic Repair.

    It is now with spinning dots stating Diagnosing your PC.

    I figured I would post here before doing anything else.

    How long should I let it run on Diagnosing your PC? Any other ideas?

    It finished the diagnosing and said it could not repair. I selected advance options and then selected boot to safe mode. Now it is stuck at the Dell Logo and no dots.

    I powered off again. It came up with automatic repair and again diagnosing and then said it could not repair. This time I picked the option to power off. I then powered on. Back to the Dell Logo with the spinning dots.

    Does hitting alt+ctrl+del bring up any options ? Pull the power cord, wait 5 mins and re-try or pulling the CMOS battery can reset the BIOS and may help. Good Luck

    yes it appears the upgraded Video drivers screwed your windows loading. This would be the time to restore that disk/SSD image you created before running the upgrade or the freshest one you have. Macrium Reflect has saved me from this kind of issues many times

    If it hasn't been more than 10 days since you installed 1803 you could roll back to 1709 and start over again and just don't install that Video driver until the issues have been resolved you would know when that was from the Nvidia support forum

    I do have weekly Acronis Backups for the last 6 weeks to include the most recent on 5/19 and the previous 5/12.

    I wound up letting it sit and now it booted to windows. So now I am in windows. Now that I am in windows, any suggestions? Should I just leave it be? Should I Should I try and update the video drivers to a previous version or get the older ones from Dell Site? I forget which driver I was on before I updated toe NVIDIA to current one listed of 391.58.

    I chatted with dell pro support and I ran SFC /Scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and both came up fine.

    Dell rep stated he does not think it is a windows driver issue. He recommended to stay on the latest NVIDIA which is 391.58 instead of going to the dell which is 391.25 released on 5/14/18.

    Another possible item. What caused me to reboot earlier was I lost my iSCSI drive connection. I read reinstalling the iscsi driver could fix it. I went into device manager and right clicked the iscsi controller to update the iscsi driver. I let windows search and it said it had the latest driver. so it really did not update anything. I then went into services, stopped the iscsi and then restarted and drive connected. Things seemed slow so I rebooted and that is when the boot issue happened.

    I have not tried another reboot and wondering if I should leave it be or go to the dell NVIDIA driver.

    New video driver probably does little extra to be worth any chance of stalling Windows out at boot; imho. If the Dell driver was only released less than a week ago, why not ? Easy and quick enough to rollback to it and do a test reboot. Another option is to just uninstall all the video drivers, restart and let Windows retrieve one that it's happy with.

    I did not try a reboot before installing the Dell Nvidia Drivers.

    I installed the Dell Drivers. It did not ask me to restart, I manually restarted.

    System booted. The screen with the spinning dots lasted around 3 to 4 minutes. This machine was always longer to boot than others I have, but spinning dots I think was closer to 1 to 2 minutes. Maybe closer to 1.

    I recal reading that 1803 turns back on Fast Startup. I remember disabling it on this machine and others.

    I went into power settings and it was on. I went ahead and turned it off, but have not tried another restart yet. I wonder if that could be causing the issue.

    Well, I do not think it is a windows driver. I booted into safe mode and still long wait to get into windows. It seems every reboot, it gets longer. Last time was over 11 minutes of spinning dots. I thought it was the KB4103721 and tried uninstalling that and still long boot times. Windows then wound up reinstalling that and again, long boot times.

    I have the latest dell drivers and firmware.

    The on thing I did notice is for my LSI 3008 integrated controller, Dell's site is at 2.51.21.0 but windows has installed 2.51.21.81.

    Another note, opening device manage takes a while to populate the list.

    Any ideas?
