Windows 10: Safe 1803? Solved

    Safe 1803?

I installed the 1803 update on my ssd PC, and had the continual boot loop that many are complaining of. I restored back to previous version after a bit of trouble, and now all is fine.
How will I know when MS have fixed the bugs and made 1803 safe to install?

Got an Intel SSD? If so, there are known issues with some of those. Microsoft have now put a block in place so on affected machines windows update won't see 'Features Update to Windows 10, version 1803' until MS have put a fix in place.

When attempting to upgrade to the Window 10 April 2018 Update, select devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series may repeatedly enter a UEFI screen after restart or stop working....

...We are working with OEM partners and Intel to identify and block devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series from installing the April 2018 Update....
    Cumulative Update KB4103721 Windows 10 v1803 Build 17134.48 - May 8

Unfortunately this issue wasn't discovered until some days into the rollout, so some got it through windows update in the first week or so. Manually updating using an ISO bypasses these blocks, so don't try that. If and when it appears in windows update for your machine then it is (at least, in Microsoft's view) fixed and safe for you to install.

I always block feature updates for a minimum of 6 months to give MS time to sort out their shoddy software engineering.

As your profile says you have Pro, that's easy for you - to delay a Features Update, just switch from 'Current Branch (Targeted)' to 'Current Branch'. The effect is to stay one release behind the latest. Now that 1803 is out you'd be getting 1709 six months after its release, for example.

Windows Update - Defer Feature and Quality Updates in Windows 10

Home doesn't offer that setting, though there's a post in that thread saying the associated registry settings worked in Home, at least, it did in 1703. The one described above is the BranchReadinessLevel.

If you are uneasy editing the registry, you can hide a Features Update. This works in both Home and Pro.

I bought a Home to Pro upgrade key for my DELL OEM Windows 10 Home licence. This was a good investment for the extra features. There are discounted licence keys available but take care to buy from a reputable supplier.
