I lost the chrome extension thing after I turned comp off. Is that normal that it has to be done over whenever comp is turned off?
Tried to do it again, says "problem with the download, try again later". Keep trying, no luck. The 'details' say "invalid manifest".

My system seems to work poorly in general. I tried following how to do a "clean install" of w10 from another help site, but I did something wrong, tried twice, and I couldnt do it.

It's not normal to loose an extension when computer is turned off. I reckon it could happen if Chrome failed to update due to corruption in a downloaded new version when auto updating but that is just a guess.

I'm not up to speed on clean installs. Someone else might comment.

There should be a newly appeared icon that you can click to adjust what happens either globally or just on specific sites or pages in the toolbar...

Link still wont work, still saying 'problem with download, contact developer or try again later', and the details saying 'invalid manifesto (whatever that is).
Looked over that Repair/Install link, lots of confusing terms for me. Is that a "clean install" link?

I used to have that "newly appeared icon" thing, but it also was gone after I turned comp off, same as the extension.

The download link works for me. I removed the extension and reinstalled it - no problem. It must be an issue with chrome.

I don't actually use chrome but you could try backing up your chrome profile with this:

Downloads - Hekasoft Backup Restore - ToolsLib

Save the backup file somewhere that you can find it when needed.

    Uninstall chrome using this:

Geek Uninstaller - the best FREE uninstaller

It's portable so doesn't need installing.

Then have a read of this and make sure that you removed chrome profile.

    How to completely Uninstall How-tos

Once chrome is gone reboot and download a fresh copy. Install it and then run Hekasoft Backup & Restore and restore your old profile.

Hekasoft wont let me backup chrome profile, says "impossible to backup".

Things are confusing. "Backup the chrome profile....uninstall chrome...but before doing that, first delete the chrome profile (that I just tried to backup). But before doing that, first backup the bookmarks....but before doing that, first 'enable the hidden files view".

So I start at the end??.....enable hidden files view...backup the bkmks...try to delete chrome profile...uninstall/reinstall chrome...then try to backup the chrome profile again with the hekasoft??

If Hekasoft Backup cannot backup profile - export bookmarks as suggested.

    To view hidden files:

Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

    See step 3

Once exported uninstall chrome and remove leftovers. Then reboot and install a fresh copy. Then import your bookmarks.

How to export the bookmarks? Under chrome bookmarks, it has Import bookmarks and settings....does not say Export.
(will I need a blank usb stick to put them on?)

    Like this:

    1. On your computer, open Chrome.
    2. At the top right, click More .
    3. Select Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager.
    4. At the top, click More > Export Bookmarks.

Chrome exports your bookmarks as an HTML file. Choose where to save the file. Save into a new folder on your desktop or something.

Import bookmarks settings - Google Chrome Help

took shortcut to try to make things simpler for me, so I just uninstalled chrome from the control panel uninstall feature instead of geek uninstaller/remove leftovers, etc. then rebooted, installed chrome again, got my bkmks back. but heckasoft still says "impossible" to backup chrome. and the extension still wont work. I click the "add to chrome", still says error.
