Task View problem since 17134.48 update...

    Hello,

On the 9th. of May my machine updated to 17134.48 which has given me problems.

My Task View previously worked as expected showing me what programmes I had running. Now after this update it also shows other things, for example it shows two instances relating to word documents dated the 10th and 9th of May. It also shows a News item I must have read. Right clicking on these gives me the option to remove and clear but neither of these options work...If this is possible can I configure Task View to stop collecting this unnecessary clutter ?

Is it possible to return Task View to its original useful form or am I stuck with this ?

I also notice that since I installed this update my machine's 'reliability monitor' is dropping on a daily basis.

Any help would be appreciated... I do notice I now have a folder labelled Windows.old on my C drive which presumably is a copy of my OS before it was 'updated'...

    Thanks.

What you are seeing is Timeline, an 'enhanced' Taskview.

The Today section is essentially the same as Taskview, then activity history appears below that. You can turn off Timeline, or you may like to see if you find it useful - your choice.

Enable or Disable Timeline in Windows 10

Open and Use Timeline in Windows 10

Yes, for 10 days you have the option to return to your previous version of Windows, after which Windows.old should be automatically deleted.

Me too (but doesn't seem to impact anything I am doing). Others have reported a rock steady Reliability History, max'd out at 10. Some screenshots of their Reliability History here...

Good: Really guy's, this is the most stabile version & build of Win10, I ever had...
Bad: ...this has been the most unstable Windows 10 release, ever!

There are always a few 'oddities' in the initial release of an updated version, I'd expect this to be resolved in a cumulative update soon.

Task View problem since 17134.48 update...

Sorted the Task View - I think.

Select Start > Settings > Privacy > Activity history - turn OFF

and Task View appears to have returned back to normal - well what 'I' call normal anyway!

Thanks for your other comments. My Reliability Monitor has sat right at the top for some weeks, suddenly its 'Skype stopped working', Windows not properly shut down etc... The latter was previously caused by the Windows 'quick boot' or whatever its called and turning it off, whilst not having any effect on the boot up time stopped the error message. I'll go looking for the power settings and see if the update has turned it back on...

Bree - thanks for your input, really appreciate it.

Yes, all previous version upgrades have turned Fast Start-up back on. It's one on the first things I turn off after upgrading :)

On my PC task view is completely broken. Most of the times it wont come up if I click the button, very often it also crashes explorer.exe. And if it does come up all it shows is this... Well done MS, well done

And no, this is not a joke. It really does show a darkened empty desktop. Probably because there are no virtual desktops active.

And there's no '+ New desktop' either - it's well and truly broken.

    Time to try...

sfc/scannow Run SFC Command in Windows 10
dism restore health Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image
and if all else fails... Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Thanks for the reply. I've already tried everything except the repair install. If I'm in the mood I will try that one too but I kind of doubt that the problem will go away since it started when I installed the first version of spring creators update that was never officially released due to some bug. When the spring creators update finally was released I updated using an install DVD (created with the media creation tool) but the issue remained.

This is really annoying. It took them months if not years to fix the action-center-not-opening-issue after Windows 10 was released and now this

Reading that, I'm so glad I waited (im)patiently for the official release before updating.

You effectively did a repair install when you updated with the official release. In you position I'd first make sure I was up to date with the 2018-05 cumulative update (17134.48) then try sfc followed by dism again, specifying the install.esd from the official release media as the source for dism to use.

Then, if that failed, the repair install again. And if that also fails, then start a new thread stating exactly which pre-release build you installed and any cumulative updates you applied. You can't be the only one to have jumped in early and have had these problems, someone else may already know the cure.
