Computer doesn't respond/awaken after display is off for a while

The following is the second occurrence of the event described. The one previous incident was 10-14 days ago.

I had been using the computer on and off all day today until about 3 pm. I left it unused for just over and hour. As usual, the screen had shut down after 15 minutes, per the power setting, but the computer itself is set to never sleep. When I attempted to use the computer again, it did not respond to the trackball or keyboard, but the power light remained on and all peripheral USB connections lights were on. It was necessary to do a hard reboot as, just as I had to do the first time this occurred. The computer is only 7 months old and functions well except for these two strange episodes.

I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions! My primary concern, of course, is that this will happen more and more frequently and/or that I will not be able to restart it.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Your first step should be to download & install the latest display driver & any updated BIOS from the computer maker.

It might simply be that your current display driver is corrupt or a Windows update has become incompatible with it. BIOS updates can include display control so that might have been affected by a Windows update.

Thank you for your response! I checked with Dell and learned there was indeed a BIOS update to be installed. I have done so, and I hope my problem will not recur. Since it only happened twice and several days apart I may not know if the issue has been resolved, but I really appreciate your help. I'll mark this thread "solved" for now.

    gini,

And you used your Dell Service Tag to check for, download & reinstall the latest display driver?

You can just go to www.dell.com/support/home then click on the Support heading and select Drivers & downloads from the dropdown list. You then enter your Dell Service Tag so that the list it shows you is tailored to your specific system [rather than being a generic list for your computer model].

Again, big thanks! I just used the Dell Support Assist and, as a result, I downloaded and installed two video driver updates. Further checking via service tag indicates I am fully updated. I also ran the Diagnostics, and no hardware problems were found.Your follow-up was really above and beyond the call of duty, and I am very grateful! :).
