1803 messed up my video thumbnails

I upgraded to 1803 on 2 pcs and since then only half my video files have thumbnails. Doesn't seem to be a particular file type - some mp4s are affected, some not (ditto mkv, avi). I have the relevant (show icons never thumbnails) boxes set correctly. I don't think it's a codec issue since, although I have VLC as default, all videos play in WMP. I don't have any codec packs installed.

Just to confuse things further, which files have thumbs is different on each pc. If I transfer half a dozen files from pc1 to pc2, which file has a thumb changes (the machines have different hardware but identical software).

I wish I could permanently opt out of these upgrades - there doesn't seem to be any difference at all after any 'upgrade', apart from stuff gets broken - eg networking in explorer is now broken on my little render farm. That'll take a day to fix.

Now where did I put that Windows 7 disk ...

Hi, quite appreciate the annoyance. As you may well know, as you have Pro you can defer the upgrades using e.g. Windows Minitool (free) or the Group Policy editor. That may let you get a later build with some bugs ironed out. It's my choice, also in waiting for 3rd party compatibility to catch up.

Of course you can also by one means or (sometimes nasty) another kill Windows updates altogether. But that's not ideal...

Personally I'd hate to be an IT admin with a lot of Win 10 machines.

This is a OneDrive issue. If you right click the OneDrive Icon either in the system tray or in the navigation pane in File Explorer, then click Settings, then click on the Settings tab, check "Save Space and download files as you need them." It seems counterintuitive but it loads all thumbnails. For now this works for me, as I have a extremely fast connection but may not be the best option for slower connectivity.

    Hi.

I have the same issue with my thumbnails across a few of my machines and as mentioned, it is very random at which thumbnails it displays and which it doesn't....

As for the onedrive solution, I don't even use onedrive and have it disabled on my machines.
I did try your solution though, but couldn't find that option in settings, "Save Space and download files as you need them."
This was no where to be found in any of the menus.

So to cut a short story long, I don't think this is the fix for the problem...

    So....

Any other suggestions? Really annoying issue this....

    Icaros

A good tool to get/restore thumbnails for video files in Windows Explorer, isIcaros (https://www.videohelp.com/software/Icaros).
I found that tool when looking for a solution to get the thumbnails back in Windows Media Center on Windows 10 1803.
It didn't solve that problem, but at least I was able to get the thumbnails back in Windows Explorer.
The reason why Windows Media Center on Windows 10 1803 didn't shown thumbnails, was because of the missing EncDec.dll file (https://www.windowsmediacenter.fr/20...-media-center/).
