UPDATE:
I reinstalled Windows 10, and everything seems to work fine now.
Thanks again for all your help
Rebuilding the search index seems to have helped. Odd. It is a complete fresh install. I wonder how often I need to rebuild it.
Hey everybody!
I think the problem most of us are sharing here is that when you open the start menu and start typing, it doesn't give you search results from the installed apps.
I have the same thing: I get search results from all over the PC (files, folders...), from settings and more, but it won't find installed apps. I have to fish them from the "all apps" list manually.
I did an upgrade from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro, then wiped everything and did a Win 10 Pro clean install. Found out about the issue afterwards.
Somebody here said they rebuilt the search index... Anybody know how this is done?
Somebody else mentioned re-installing... Hope I don't have to do this, since I spent a lot of time getting Windows 10 installed and set up, and then installing and setting up Ubuntu. I would have to take them both down and start from scratch if I were to reinstall Windows :-/
The "good" news is, we're not alone. This very much sounds like a bug, and as such, we'll probably have a fix from Microsoft soon.
More people with the same problem:
Start menu search not finding applications? - Windows 10 Forums
error - Windows/Cortana Search - Windows 10 Forums
Questions that might be relevant:
- If you have the bug: did you clean install, or upgrade? (I clean installed)
- During the installation, did you disable all the calling-home hoo-haa? What about Cortana? (I disabled all of it)
Let's narrow this sucker down. Perhaps we can fix it!
EDIT: Nushydude found a possible fix here. Seems like a lengthy process, but worth trying!
UPDATE: re-indexing everything fixed it for me. Other changes, may or may not be related: 1. The "we're getting search ready..." message is now gone / 2. I completely hid the search button from the task bar.

I solved this by reinstalling, another PC I had to reinstall twice.
Basically the only solution to this is reinstalling Windows until this issue doesn't show up.
None of the solutions here worked for me, not even indexing.
I simply reinstalled.
