Can't rename "New Folder" or change folder name

I create a new folder. It's highlighted in blue. I start renaming and only the first character is accepted. Then I right-click and choose rename and the highlighted character(s) are selected but when I attempt to enter a new name, again only one or two characters are accepted, the rename process shuts off, and I'm again left with a folder that I can't rename.

What has happened and how can I fix it?

    Hi lbeck.

Has not happened to me but an in place repair / upgrade can fix a lot of issues. Before you try an in place repair have you run

    sfc /scannow

You might also try System Restore if restore points are enabled and you can id specific time it started.

By the way did you update to V1803 and did it start with this update?

If the In place repair / upgrade is run now with new media your device will be updated to V1803. Please be aware, some people have reported issues.

I would suggest you make a copy of your personal data and I would create an Image using Macrium Reflect or a similar product so you have a reliable way to restore to where you are today. (This includes making the boot media).

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

    In place repair / Upgrade

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    lbeck,

Are you able to type correctly in applications such as a word processor? Or is the problem confined to File explorer?

If you cannot type in word processors either then I think you might find that the keyboard is the problem. Look for muck underneath keys, particularly underneath your Alt keys.

    Best of luck,

    try3

the problem is in File Explorer. I don't believe the keyboard is the problem.
    Thanks for your response

Please verify. Do you mean there aren't any typing issues in emails, documents including renaming the document, same with spreadsheets or what ever else you do?

I can and type anything on any of my plethora of apps without issue - well - maybe a misspelled word here or there. When trying to rename or change a folder name in Windows Explorer the highlighted name goes wonky and only accepts the first letter of the change. Sometimes if I type only one letter every few seconds it'll take. But there's definitely something wrong with Explorer.

I'll be surprised if I'm the only one experiencing this.

    Did you try

    sfc /scannow

Might also try chkdsk to seem if there is an error in the file table.

    lbeck,

This is a bit of a shot in the dark but I do wonder if your display driver is out-of-date or corrupted. The symptom you are describing is a visual one that is altered by slowing down the visual changes.

I suggest checking for updates display drivers & BIOS with your hardware maker[s] and installing/reinstalling the latest display driver [note that Device manager's update driver facility is of no help with this because it cannot recognise a driver that is misbehaving so it would quite happily say that the installed driver is the most recent whatever was wrong with the thing].

    Best of luck,

    Tried scannow and chkdsk.

    On sfc /scannow
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    On chkdsk/admin

I think that your shot in the dark may have hit something. I updated my graphics driver and now I can rename folders.

I'll report back if this is not a permanent fix.

    Thanks.
