random freezing when moving mouse to taskbar

i've been dealing with this problem on my laptop since 10 was available and have yet to find a solution. i have tried every trick i've come across on the web or magazines, etc. it's still an issue. now i have finally put 10 on my desktop after running it in a dual boot setup with 8.1 and have had relatively no issues with it. now the screen freezes up randomly around 6 to 8 times in the last week. this occurs 99% of the time when i move the cursor to the taskbar. i don't even get the chance to click on the icon, it just freezes. same on the laptop, except it also happens when i go to the upper right X to close a program. can't believe i'm having the same issue on two different computers.
any suggestions would be most appreciated. i am awaiting the spring creator's update hoping that it will fix this issue, but i thought i'd head over here first. i just updated the bios hoping that might help, but it froze about 2 hrs. afterwards. geez! on the verge of heading back to 8.1. thanks.

Hi zenchi. Welcome to the Tenforums @zenchi

Have to ask is this the same mouse?

Likely you have the same software on both devices?

I would start with unloading any AV that is not Defender. Then I would try the Clean boot method to isolate third party software.

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

If it happens with a clean boot could you post back.

Does reliability history have anything to say. Click start, start typing reliability history, app should pop to top of list.

laptop uses trackpad, desktop uses wireless mouse. oddly, my laptop hasn't had a freeze in a week. i don't do much on it tho'. am trying your suggestion and will get back to you in a few days. i did keep bitdefender free on and just today added my firewall (private firewall) and so far no problems. will add things in one-at-a-time. i also uninstalled the intel graphics driver and reloaded it. thanks for your help...

no solution yet. added a few services and it froze 3 times tonight, but not how it usually does but doing something within a program i.e. clicking a graphic on a web page. this seems worse than before. also i attempted using a media streamer for my tv but it won't drop down to 720p like it did in win.8.1; the screen just goes black and there's a hand with a finger extended. it's not the middle one, but i got the point!!! as well, windows only sees my screen res at 1360 or something. it took a number of reboots and uninstalling the intel graphics driver to finally get back to 1080p. will keep trying the services, but i have a hunch that's not it. cheers.

You can always do an in place repair / upgrade. Assuming you are on 1709 this will be a repair. I always recommend backing up personal data.

If it doesn't freeze with a clean boot then I believe strongly you are looking at a software conflict.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

One other thing, open device manager, click on view, click on show hidden devices. Expand mouse and keyboard and delete hidden devices (they look grayed out)

As well please check window updates for any outstanding updates.

thanks zbook. yes there was freezing after clean boot. i found 2 keyboard entries in device manager; so deleted one. no greyed out entries tho'. has stopped being able to download and install updates (last tuesday's). so, i will do a repair on the weekend as a couple of other issues have cropped up as well. i've never had this problem in 8.1 and didn't experience it until i install windows 10 as the sole OS. weird. the laptop is still dual-boot and no freezing in either OS, as well, the laptop insalled that last update without problems. i may migrate to 10 only on that in a week or two.

The Windows 10 build 1803 was supposed to be released earlier this month. The latest info reports a release date on 4/30/2018.
So if you are planning to download an iso the servers may be busy on the first day or the first few days.

What happens when you use safe mode?

When available please post a beta log collector zip.
