Recovery will most probably bring you back to HP Recovery partition and all the problems with it. Best to do clean install if problems were not related to hardware.

HP Support Assistant found two errors:
    1) Windows Update has been repaired.
    2) Detected potential error in Windows Update database.

Perhaps not relevant, but non the less.

The computer is under warranty, so I'm dependent upon the tech to be willing to do a clean install provided no hardware or drivers errors are found. If they refuse a clean install I'll f**k the warranty and do it myself. The alternative is to wait a year and a half before doing a clean install after the warranty has expired. But before doing that, any half assed "repair" done by these techs that does not fix the problems will result in me returning to the shop . . . again and again.
It's up to them,-less work or more work . . . do the math.

Check that warranty again or with them, most applies only to HW. Another possibility, make full disk backup and clean install windows and drivers. You can always restore it if you ever have to send it back.

Although I agree with the fresh install, Windows Update issues are very relevant.
Check the status of the Windows Updates in Update and Security and then the installed update history page.
If you can capture screenshots, please post them and show them to the technician.
Also run winver and let us know the exact version that is being used.

Have you tried disabling the graphic card driver in Device Manager?
