    Additional information

Alright, so additional information is that I have also done:

    Chkdsk C: /f /r /x

It scanned stage 1 to stage 5 and said "windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required."

But then it says once again:

" failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"

    So somethings still wrong.

    I then typed:

    "Chkdsk C: /r /f /v"

    And it says:

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) "

So at this point what do I do?
I don't really understand all of these terms
Try an "offline scan". Meaning it will run at boot time in safe mode.

(Perform an offline scan and fix of C: drive for error checking
    chkdsk C: /f /offlinescanandfix

Now I refreshed it and opened command prompt again and the first text reads:

    Microsoft Windows [ version 10.0.17134.1 ]
Not enough memory resources are available to process this command

(I didn't type anything - that's how it opened up on command prompt. I then typed in:

    bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal

    And then it replied:

The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The requested system device cannot be found.

Pardon, but are you replying to my post or something else?

We posted at the same time, sort of.

I have been and am still following your post's advice.

    I've just done the "chkdsk C: /f /offlinescanandfix"
And it's the same as before - it goes through the five Stages and says that "windows has scanned the file system and found no problems. No further action is required."

But then it again goes on to say "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50"

And the other commands (following the link and using option three) seem to just be the same commands previously used and failed at.

I don't know what I am doing - I'm just following instructions which seem to be repeats of the same several command prompts which results in the same problems over and over.

*failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50

    *cannot lock current drive

*the volume is in use by another process

*windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected

    *and more like that

With all that, it sounds like maybe something like Bitlocker has it's teeth in it. I'm not up on Bitlocker and encryption stuff, sorry. If that's what it is. Reason I suggested offline scan was I thought safe mode would help, like the tutorial says. But....it's definitely something else, something has put a lock on it. Afraid I'm out of suggestions. Maybe @topgundcp or @Bree have a suggestion.

    A little update:

Okay, so since the data is apparently lost at this point (unless someone knows what to do?) I tried the windows reinstall option 2.

Now, on the popup there it asks me where do you want to install Windows?

It has five options, all say drive 0 but each has it's own partition - 1,2,3,4,5

Every single one has a message when I select it that "windows can't be installed on drive 0 partition (whatever of the five options)

Each says that it can't do it because" the selected disk is of the GPT partition style"

And I have to ask what the hell is this?

Is Toshiba just a terrible choice or something? Why so awkward and impossible??

Delete all the existing partitions, thru the install media where you were. You'll end up with ONE big empty unallocated partition. That's what you choose to install it on. Windows will figure out what partitions it needs to create.

Does that mean for sure abandoning all hope of recovering any files? (presumably yes but I'm still learning)

Also - how do I do that? Just simply select delete on that same popup?

I can't address the recovery of files part. It looks like thru all the previous posts here that it would not be possible because you keep running into a "locked" drive issue. Do you have a backup of your files somewhere? You can reinstall your apps.

But to answer the current question. You highlight each of the partitions and click the "delete" option. It will make you confirm. Repeat until all are gone and you have ONE big empty partition. Choose that to install on.

If you don't already have the link to the Clean Install tutorial, here it is. All these steps are in there.

No I don't have anything backed up, I was ready to hit the switch and go the nuklr option but now I'm not sure - if I had my work backed up I wouldn't hesitate, apps can be reinstalled but work will be lost.

So in any case now I know how to do that if/when my patience runs out.

I need one more try on recovering the computer first.. And I wonder what or why I am locked out.? I have no knowledge of anything bitcoin related, nothing. All I know is that everything was normal but then for a week or two Microsoft kept forcing these updates and restarts and then one time it gets itself to around 60-70 percent and then it just freezes up, stops it's percent counting and shuts down and from then the problems began, starting with the log on screen boxes not appearing but just going in an endless useless loop.

If I can get my work files off of there then I can go ahead and delete the drives and reset it.

Is that possible or is everything impossible whilst that thing locks me out? Could it be automatically locking me out as a self-preservation measure? Since its crashed before it updated? Could I override the lock somehow?
