Letting users defer updates is counter productive, "if" your using your user base to test for bugs. Granted, there are the Insiders, but they don't seem to be catching all the gotchas. I wonder how many are on slow ring versus fast ring? Microsoft seems very reluctant to let anybody other than Enterprise customers control when they get auto updates. I often wonder how this stuff doesn't get detected until zero hour, etc. Just my 2 cents.

Looking at this logically ... what is the percentage of the Insiders compared to Windows 10's Full User Base, I have no actual figures from anywhere, but I would not be surprised if it was a lot less that One Percent.

This would leave Ninety Nine percent of systems with a potential, due to components or software setup, that could trigger an issue, Totally untried or not tested

Also how many Insiders trial insider builds on Virtual machines, with nice safe virtual hardware - I would think the majority

When it is broken down like this then the actual numbers of testers is, as a representative sample, extremely small. I am surprised that this galant band of unpaid volunteers uncover as many issues as they do

Very good and I think very valid points there Barman. I forgot about all those doing it in VM's. There are also a large number of, "let other people be the guinea pigs" out there. Just look at all the "how do I disable windows update" posts in the Updates and Activation section of the forum. And "I'm waiting at least a month" etc posts. I don't know how they keep track of what insider build has what "know issue", slow ring versus fast ring etc. Must be fun, "not", lol.

    This is spot on.

It is amazing how many people (even experts to a degree) say MS should test things more, do updates less frequently etc.

They really do not fathom the scale of MS's operation with 700 millions users now on Windows 10. I am sure you are right - Insiders are probably less than 1% of user base. So 99% of pcs, software combinations can NEVER be tested. It is only going into the wild that some bugs will surface. In many cases, it is because vendor driver manufacturers only work reactively rather than proactively (attitude being why bother spend any effort if we do not need to)

It is quite rare a bug is an actual showstopper, but just an annoyance. People want their cake and eat it ie new features but no bugs from day 1. That is an almost impossible aspiration. So what if Timeline is a little unpolished and has issues on initial release. They will get fixed.

I have said this several time, the real solution is to allow users to defer feature and driver upgrades for up to a year even on Home. Then cautious people can wait until various teething issues are fixed thanks to the unselfish people who go for it (not just Insiders).

The alternative is to slow down development to a snails pace, but imo you might just as well move to Windows 8.1 until its support ends.

It was interesting that the "blocking Bug" came to light between the release of 1803 to Release Preview, and the planned original general Release Date, Perhaps a higher number of Insiders are actually "only" on the Release Preview?

I'm on the RP Ring as I cannot spare the time to properly test Slow or Fast Ring, maybe there are a lot of others who want to have the ability to flag issues and give other feedback but are short of time

I actually think that for the target user base the way that Home is set-up is ideal - Your average Smartphone or Tablet user is used to waking up to find their OS has changed, for them what's different about their laptop that it does not do the same? they way they think of as the normal way.

Well said @barman and @cereberus. Indeed, it's a big world out there, and some problems will never surface unless (a) somebody with an unusual or statistically unlikely configuration runs the software and (b) information about the anomaly gets back to Microsoft. (B) is actually the best argument to leave Windows telemetry turned on, too -- namely, because it's how MS gets the information it needs to discover that the bug exists and to gather the information it needs to get the diagnosis and repair processes underway.
Thanks for stating this and other key topics, guys -- we have to bang this drum loudly if we want our site members and visitors to hear and understand it.
    Best wishes,

Neither one. Latest, most probable, is 17134.1. Those 2 are quite old.

So my pc rebooted to install version 1803. The installation got stuck at 42% so I had to reboot and revert back to my previous install, no big deal.

The error code I'm getting is 0xc1900101.

I googled this and am running a systemfile scan atm. Any other recommendations to enable the update to go through?
