What is the easiest way (and safest way) to get the upgrade when it is released to the general public (hopefully on April 10th)?
It's been awhile and i am "rusty"
I am going to watch the download page Download Windows 10 and as soon as it changes to say...
Windows 10 Spring Creators Update now available
..I'll download the Media Creation Tool, make the install media for 1803 and use that to upgrade my machines. If you make the ISO, then double-click on it to mount it, if (as I am going to do) you make the USB then plug it in. Find Setup.exe on the media and run it to start the upgrade.

Downloaded the ESD, converted to ISO to mount, and ran setup.exe. Took about 2.5 hrs to Upgrade. Everything went flawlessly, even many custom settings (disable hibernation, add recycle bin to nav pane, etc) that I used, remained untouched. Only things I had to re-do were Folders View customizations and disable auto arrange. Trying to see if Timeline will be useful.

@Bree: So, then i don't need to actual transfer it to a usb flash drive or dvd iso, i can just download the file for Media Creation Tool, double click and run it? And then have it start the upgrade? (with everything aboard....I want to bring everything with me not do a clean install)...

You download the MCT, run it and choose the 'make media for another PC' option. This will then download about 3-4GB of install files and make a .ISO file (or a bootable USB, your choice).

If you use the Media Creation tool to make the ISO you can mount the ISO as a virtual DVD drive and run setup from there to perform an upgrade. You only need to make a physical DVD or USB if you want to boot from it in order to do a clean install.

Just like to add 1 small point. The Media Creation Tool when creating the ISO will ask you where you want to create it. If you're tight on space on your C drive, or if you just want it separate from the main or would like to use it on another box, direct it to an external drive of some sort. You can still just mount it and run Setup.exe.

"i can just download the file for Media Creation Tool, double click and run it?"

No, the MCT is Option One in this tutorial - Download Windows 10 ISO File
In Step 5, you select whether to Upgrade now or create media. I prefer to use Step 8 to make an ISO that I can keep on hand, in case you need a repair in the future. Make Desktop the save location and then r-click 'Mount' and run setup.exe and let the magic happen.

There is a video of the full install procedure here (you're using Step 4 Option) -

I noticed your version is the Home Build. I'm running 1803 as well. Could you please take a look at your Event Viewer and see if you have a DCOM error - Event ID 10016 pertaining to the Windows.SecurityCenter.WscDataProtection.

    I would appreciate it!

    Thanks.

Are you sure that DCOM error is Windows.SecurityCenter.WscDataProtection?

The problem is, something is missing. The protocols are flagging a Guid that doesn't exist in my case. It is the weirdest DCOM error I have ever seen.
