@Craig "no need to even create an iso file...just click on "use upgrade assistant"."

That option is usually the last one to get posted. As I said, I prefer to use the MCT, generate an ISO, control the install process and have a copy that I can keep and use like the Windows OS DVD that mfrs used to give you with a new computer, in what seems like ancient times now.

    Hi All,

I thought I'd be adventurous a few day's ago and try and install the spring creators update on my desktop computer that's running Windows 10 Pro..Version 1709..Build 16299.334 . That was a big mistake, at least on my machine..the installation seemed to be going pretty smoothly, but when the system needed to restart / reboot it got stuck, and all I heard was one long 'beep' . I had to insert a windows installation disc to get past that and just opted to go back to the previous version that I had been running ( Version 1709..Build 16299.334 ). At this point in time I'll be very concerned when the spring creators update will be offered via the 'normal' windows update mechanism . Has this happened to anyone else ? I never received any error message, my system just locked up, I'm not running any third party ant-virus software.

I upgraded four home desktop PCs with 1803 without any problem.

If you have Pro you can do that, but it's not an option in Home.

It's not really likely to be an issue for most of us though, unless you have a brand new model that has been tested by MS for compatibility you are unlikely to get 1803 in the first phase of the rollout. Many had to wait months before Fall Creators Update appeared in their windows update - a very few have only just had the upgrade to 1709.

I will wait on the stories of death, despair and hopelessness to get around... but also mainly for the MCT to have it so I can clean install it if there are any issues on Windows Update.

Yes, once you have created the ISO using Media Creation Tool you can for instance use and application called Rufus and create a bootable USB Thumbdrive.

After all this you can use your USB stick to boot the setup and finally either repair your Windows on C-drive, upgrade if you have not done so already or clean install Windows (removing all accounts, applications, documents and settings).

Just to clarify, the ISO is for installation within Windows (you have to be signed-in). You can't simply copy to a usb. If you want a usb drive for repair or clean install, it has to be made bootable. The MCT has an option for this too. I run both options, one to Upgrade and one to have a repair usb, on hand.

If I had to guess, I'd opt for an incompatible video driver. What media did you use to try the installation; iso, usb, etc ? I had zero issue with iso, other than 2.5 hrs to get to desktop and new version setup. Here is a tool that may help you diagnose a setup problem, if you want to try again or wait for the MCT to fetch an official iso - https://www.ghacks.net/2018/04/05/us...pgrade-issues/

I generally just use the MCT to make the USB, that is the most versatile option as it can be used both for booting to do a clean install and for running an upgrade from within Windows.

Technically, with a bit of fiddling about it is possible to create a bootable USB from the ISO, you have to use Diskpart to clean all partition info from the USB, create and format a Fat32 partition then mark it Active. Then you can mount the ISO and copy all the files and folders to the USB. Far simpler to let the MCT do it for you.
