How far behind Insiders is regular Windows 10 ?

I'm one of the folk who uses Windows Media Center on Windows 10, and apparently Microsoft have done something with the codecs that stops WMC from working at all on the latest Insiders (according to a thread at Green Button).

So - does the next big update to Windows 10 (probably April 2018) catch up with Insiders and kill my WMC, or have I got a bit longer to enjoy TV on my pc ?

Since there's several Insiders, this might be a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but any info welcome.

Officially unsupported - WMC has always been removed when upgrading a Media Centre edition of W7/8 since Win10 was first released in 2015. It requires a modified installer from a third-party to put it back again, which runs the risk of installing more than you bargained for :) Same goes for the Windows 7 Games, which always get removed at an upgrade and have to be reinstalled.

Probably, but I'll leave that to an Insider to confirm.

In the mean time, I'll just say that there are plenty of other ways to 'enjoy TV on my pc', from simple live tv and catch-up services in your browser, up to WMC alternatives like Kodi.

Personally I do it the other way round, casting media from my pc to the TV. That's a native Windows 'Cast to' function - I've never missed the Media Centre. :)

I am using WMC with Windows 10 x64 1803 17133.1 on two separate PCs and I have no problem watching Live TV or recording TV. The only issue I have is I can not watch any recording done before 17133.1. When I try, I get the same Decoder Error as referenced in an above post. However, I can use WMP to watch those programs. While I know there are other Media type programs, I have never found one as good as Windows Media Center. I was really disappointed when Microsoft discontinued it.

I did a test on a VMware insiders, but couldn't test my pcie tuner because VMware doesn't do hardware pass through. I copied across a wtv recording, and got the decoder error message. So you reckon I'll be OK with new recordings and live TV when the next upgrade comes ? Must remember to make a Macrium image...

I concur that WMC is the best for OTA TV - I have TBS quad HD tuners in 2 of my pcs, and use Video Redo for editing.

    Thanks to all for replies.

iPlayer has the TV licence/IP address problem and the rest have the advert problem. I usually line up some stuff to record and watch it later skipping ads. I tried ITV on demand once, and there seemed to be even more ads than OTA. If you rewind, the ads start over. I haven't seen an ad in 10 years.

Also I doubt my remote works with TV in a browser. Then there's the logging in nonsense. I guess they have a good reason for wanting my email - cue a ton of spam ...

I also like to keep some series (ads edited out) - how would that work with browser TV or Sky ? Apparently, recording TV for any other purpose than timeshifting is against the law (ditto no licence).

I suppose I'm stuck in my ways.

For US forum members, this is what a TV detection van looks like. There's people in jail for not having a licence. LOL, as they say ...
