Explorer opening by itself

But the USB drive does not move at all so the cable and connection are physically stable.

That does not guarantee a good electrical connection but Ok. It may well be the connector inside the drive's box has come loose too etc.

As @dalchina suggests, work by eliminating one factor at the time. There seems to be a "problem" somewhere so by trial and error you can find out what it is.

So when I got back to my computer and logged in I got a message asking me for the autorecovery password of a Word file I was working on, which is password protected. So that strongly indicates the USB drive is disconnecting and reconnecting. THANKS TO YOU ALL!

You're welcome but that still does not solve the problem unless you'd plan on replacing the whole shebang.

If not then we'll need to pinpoint what exactly is causing the trouble.

hope the care goes well. As for my drive, it's bad if it's the on board connector or the drive itself. I'll have to try a new cable and then work from there.

I downloaded USBDeview and it shows that it's not my USB drive but my wired keyboard that gets unplugged. Interesting. And hopefully not as bad news.
