How do I edit the metadata of mp4, avi and mkv files?

When viewing by details, you can choose to add various columns of metadata to the folder to sort files by, such as album or genre. How do you edit any of this data, for any file type?

Right now my TV shows are sorted by season on my PC, but in different folders. What I want to be able to do is have just one folder for each show, with each season appearing in a collapsible group, like the My PC folder does by default. The problem is I don't know how to change the data of the files so that I can add a 'group' to each of them.

What program do I need to edit the details of a file so that I can group video files by "Season Number", and change the star rating of the file?

Hi, here's what I have in my Details pane for these:

mkv is not taggable in the same way- there is no intrinsic provision for metadata in the format.

avi similarly offers little. At most I can add a comment - see M&W in the Comments column.

By default, you will not find file explorer offers all those options.

There is no absolute consistency in what is available per file type.

It is possible to edit quite a bit in file explorer (more with a free extension) and in the Properties, Details sheet.

Programs like mp3tag (donation) are good with a number of audio file formats.

    welcome to TenForums @bomberswarm2

For .mp4 it's easy, you can edit the metadata from File Explorer, either in the Details tab for its Properties or, if you turn on the Details Pane in File Explorer's View ribbon, you can edit it there too.

For mkv and avi the details aren't editable in File Explorer, but apparently there are third party metadata editors that can change them.

I've recreated the problem by converting one of my .mp4s to .mkv format. I can edit details for the .mp4 but not the .mkv. You can clearly see a text entry box appears when you select an item for the .mp4, but none appears for the .mkv.

How to add details to mkv files for explorer?

    Hi,
It seems the part of the answer is written above by Bree ... and I found some more details... the software I managed to change MKV meta-data >> MKVToolNix … a free video metadata editor for Matroska (MKV) video format. It provides a ‘Header Editor‘ tool which enables you to edit metadata information of a MKV video. Other features of this software worth mentioning are Chapter Editor and Multiplexing. It can be used to create, edit, and examine MKV videos by opening or dropping them to its interface. You can also customize some preferences like interface language, font and size, layout, etc. MKVToolNix Downloads – Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows
