You could either have a problem with your graphics card or your power supply unit. I would try changing the power supply first which is cheaper to do. If the problem persist, you may have an issue with your graphics card. You can run Burning Test or other benchmark and see the results. If the screen freezes or goes black, then your VGA has a problem. If you get a blue screen, it could be your RAM or motherboard. To check your hard disk's health you can use Hard Disk Sentinel.

    i have a weird variation.

sometimes when cold booting, the monitor doesn't "wake up". there's no internal speaker, so no warning to diagnose. holding the power off/shut down button on the machine to turn it off and then turn on again fixes the issue, sort of, insofar as it posts (says check bios, etc)

desktop. maybe i have hardware issue? XD

the reliability history in win 10 usually tells me a previous shutdown was unexpected. so i kinda don't shut down the machine anymore unless I leave the house for the whole day. no problem with sending it to sleep and waking it back up.
OK, with me, I know that Windows 10 is outputting to a non-existent monitor because I often have a YouTube video running that I can hear. The blank screen happens randomly and is not that big an issue because I can just reboot and 9/10 it will boot to desktop fine. At first, I thought it might be a corrupted Local login account. That did not help. the problems started when I installed a Soundblaster next to my GPU PCIe slot, I have also been overclocking, not much, 4.8 Mghz @1.250 on an i7-8700k (which is stable). Beginning to think this is a Windows 10 issue. I have switched off onboard graphics in Bios (chose PEP instead the other setting which i can't recall) and device Manager has my Nvidia 1080ti displayed correctly.

Most of the black screens with the mouse I have seen are because Windows Update is working on the background and it takes some time until it installs all the updates to show the desktop. In a few cases there is also a faulty graphics driver due to the official driver (OEM) being replaced by Windows Update. You have to start in Low Graphics or Safe Mode and reinstall the OEM graphics driver.

I DDU'd the graphics driver in safe mode. Pretty certain the phantom monitor Windows 10 is booting to, started after the big update last month.

Just noticed that if I pull out and put back in the HDMI (TV secondary monitor) and DVI connections from the graphics card when I get the blank screen, it starts working again. Despite being very stable in benchtests and gaming, could my 4.8ghz @1.250v on an i7-8700K overclock be causing this? Pretty certain it is a Windows 10 thing... PC is simply randomly posting to the integrated graphics, despite me turning it off in Bios and Device Manager (Disabled).

Turning off fast boot from Power Management, not Bios, did the trick for me. The recent Windows 10 updates might have switched it on, or it could be me changing power settings after an OC.
