If you cannot avoid it, then you can reinstall Windows 10 without formatting the disk. This will put all your data and applications in a folder Windows.old where you can take anything your need. This is a quick way to skip the time-consuming backup process. To quickly install all drivers you can use Snappy Driver Installer or Driver Pack. Both these utilities scan your hardware and then download and install automatically all drivers. To quickly install some free software, visit www.ninite.com, check the boxes for the software you need and then click on Download your Ninite. Run the resulting file which is a script that downloads and installs the selected software for you. After having done these, you need to only add any other software, but you should have spared much time.

Thanks for that. I'm going through the Dell forums to see why this Inspiron 7378 won't boot into Safe Mode. If I can get it to boot into Safe Mode I think I can fix this.

I am not sure if you know it already, but in Windows 8 and 10 you cannot boot in Safe Mode by pressing F8 at boot time (before the Windows logo appears). This was done only in Windows 7 and earlier. You can do that in Windows 8 and 10 only if you enable the legacy boot loader.

To boot in Safe Mode with the default method, you can either interrupt the boot process 3-4 times until you see the recovery screen and then select the Advanced Boot Options menu. A better option, if you can normally load Windows is to hold SHIFT and restart. The computer boots in the Advanced Boot Options menu. From there you press the appropriate number to boot in Safe Mode. I always prefer to boot in Safe Mode with networking, just in case I need internet access.

To enable the legacy boot loader (Windows 7 style) when in Windows press Win+X and start a Command Prompt with Administrator rights. Then type the following commands (press ENTER at the end to execute) :

    Code:
    bcdedit /set {globalsettings} advancedoptions true
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
Now you should be able at next restart to press F8 and select a boot option, like in Windows 7. If you have changed your mind and prefer the modern Windows 10 boot loader, open a Command Prompt with Administrator rights again and type the following commands:

    Code:
    bcdedit /set {globalsettings} advancedoptions false
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard
    I hope that helps.

Help!!! I am just now experiencing the black screen with mouse cursor issue. I am able to get to the sign in screen and can see it. I enter my password and it then takes me to a black screen with only the cursor showing. I am able to hit control alt delete and see the lock screen but when I select task manager, it goes back to the black screen. I have also tried the Shift-restart option to attempt to restart in Safe Mose. It tells me that it's restarting but then goes back to the black screen after a minute or so. I have tried disconnecting power, disconnecting devices, and multiple attempts to restart and there is no change! Please help! I need this computer to work!! I run a Dell Inspiron by the way... thanks!

Probably Windows are installing some updates and until they finish they delay showing the desktop. Start normally and let them enough time to see what happens. Otherwise you could go to System Restore and load a restore point that worked before.

I'd like to add my problem which is not dissimilar, I decided to do a repair install of Windows & everything appeared to go fine, no black screen/boot problem upon restarting but after running Windows update I restarted & found the same problem as listed in this thread. I heard the Windows startup sound but no log in page appeared, just a back screen with spinning dots & cursor. Tried ctrl, alt del, hard shutdown, Fast startup was off as I'd turned it off when install had finished. I left it over 30 minutes to be sure it wasn't installing anything.
I can't understand what could be causing it.
    I restored using Macrium image.

This is because Windows Update installs a graphics driver which is not fully compatible with your display adapter. To solve that you must install latest AMD drivers directly from AMD's site and then use the show/hide tool to block any driver update. Then you should be safe to restart without fear of the infamous black screen. To be extra sure you could create a restore point before installing any driver.

I will look into that but have had no problem with running repair install previously (the problem appeared to start in January) & I have both nVidia & Intel graphic' cards not AMD, also Driver updates don't appear under Windows updates so I have to use wumt to do that.
I can restore the original Intel graphics card driver from the driver CD which came with the pc.
