This was the download of the upgrade. It shutdown and rebooted. Any suggestions for black screen when no cursor ever appears. Have no idea what to do when there is nothing on my screen to use. How long could I expect to wait for cursor to appear?
After you power your system, wait for a while to boot then press the power button once and after 10secs press the power button again and see if the screen will come up

Thanks Darkmiss, I followed your instructions for logging in blind and then pulled up the Project window using WindowsKey-P. It was a relief to at least get that far. I've tried all 4 options available and still cannot get the screen to come on. What should I try next? By the way, the malfunctioning computer is HP Pavillions.

I may be missing something, but I don't get the instruction to "tap" the power button. Tapping it does nothing. Holding it for several seconds shuts the system down, and that seems to be the only way I can undo the black screen. Sometimes I get it when I hit ctrl+alt+del to see the Task Manager, and sometimes I get it when I restart (which it doesn't do under that circumstance). Part of the problem is that it's intermittent. I do not want to reload 10 if I can help it. I only have one graphics adapter, on the motherboard.

I took the advice as per message from DingdongJR , updated my BIOS and then downloaded the intel driver which works(ed) for windows 8 and it all works beautifully now. Thanks for the advice.

Okay if you have just upgraded to windows 10 and are sitting at a black screen for way too long here's the problem and how to fix it.

If you have an on board Intel graphics controller as well as an add on graphics card, windows thinks you have one more monitor connected than you actually have. so when windows loads its outputting the video signal to a bogus monitor.

    How to fix this
firstly wait long enough so the mouse cursor to appear when you move the mouse.
(blank screen with a white mouse cursor)

Then press the space-bar and enter your login password or pin (yes your doing this blind)

You should now be logged into windows
if the desktop dose not appear after 30 seconds then press WindowsKey-P down arrow twice and enter.

    I hope this helps

THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH WINDOWS 10.

Below is a Microsoft Knoledge Base entry from April of this year.

    httpw://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3055414

"The lock screen in Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 might appear as a black screen with a mouse cursor
    Symptoms

When you sign out of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 and return to the lock screen, you might see only a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor. Pressing the Alt+Tab keys or the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys has no visible effect.
    Workaround

If you are experiencing this issue, follow these steps to sign into Windows:

At the black screen, press the Ctrl key once on an attached physical keyboard. (You won’t see any visible change, but pressing the Ctrl key will place the cursor in the password box that you’re currently not able to see.)

Now type the password of the user that just signed out and press Enter. This will sign you back into Windows and the desktop will appear.

If you failed to sign in because you mistyped the password, press Enter once more. Then retype the password and press Enter." ...

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE INSTALLING WINDOWS 10. AFTER ENTERING YOUR PASSWORD, THE CURSOR SHOULD VANISH FOR SEVERAL MINUTES WHILE WINDOWS COMPLETES THE INSTALL SETUP. MY COMPUTER, A FAST ALIENWARE, TOOK ABOUT FIVE MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE SETUP AND THEN THE WINDOWS 10 DESKTOP APPEARED.

I've been trying to deal with the black screen issue for the last one month with no success. The Windows key + P trick hasn't had any effect. I don't have a 2nd monitor to try and resolve the "phantom screen" issue if it is in fact sending a signal to a non-existent monitor. I don't have a way to reset to the previous OS.

It wasn't my idea to update and now I'm stuck with this black screen and a cursor that can do nothing.

If anyone has any other tricks up their sleeves, I could really use the help.
Nothing works - no control, alt , del , not able to enter safe mode ...

    Guys please help
