    You should try to roll back to seven and do the BIOS updates after.
    He could indeed go back to W7 if he has his original key.
    And, yes, a clean install using the DISKPART would delete all partitions.
    Agree, BIOS updates should be done (and can be done independent of an OS).
    Still, not sure how he would successfully recover his data without buying a new hard drive to install an operating system on. Any activity on the current drive has the potential to overwrite the deleted data and render it unrecoverable.

    If the option is still available, Settings > Update & security > Recovery. Or>Backup >Looking for an older backup >Go to backup and restore

    It's up to You! 7 years is a long journey of work. There are more options to deal with...
