I suppose it is, strange but I guess I never bothered to update as long as it was working fine.
Yes, okay. It's common to not update a BIOS if you're not having any problems. Updating a BIOS can be risky business (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). But in your case, it will be necessary.

Meanwhile, I'd like you to try something on the Realtek NIC:

In Device Manager, highlight the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
    Right-click and select Update Driver
Select Browse my computer for driver software
Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
Make sure the box is checked to Show compatible hardware

What does it show, other than Microsoft Driver version 9.1.406.2015 dated 4/6/2015?

On the page which says 'select device driver you want to install for this hardware' it lists 2 options

Realtek PCIe GBE family controller (microsoft)
And the second option is the exact same however it says in brackets (Realtek)

Okay, we can try two things to see if we can get you back online:

    1. Select the Realtek driver and let it install. You'll have to reboot the system for it to take affect.

If that doesn't get you back online,

    2. Back in Device Manager, select your Realtek NIC and right click, select uninstall device. After it's been uninstalled (only the device, not the driver), highlight your computer name at the top, right-click and select Scan for hardware changes. Windows should find the NIC and install the preferred driver for it.

Ok tries option 1 and no luck sadly, still offline an unable to even detect router. Also funnily enough restarting the system brought back that 3rd account. Trying option 2 now.

Do you have the results of sfc /scannow yet?

Option 2 has been tried. It reinstalled Realtek PCIe GBE family controller after I scanned for hardware changes. Should I reboot again? Also the I forgot to say, when I open cmd prompt and use sfc /scannow it tells me I must be in an admin session or some such.

    Yes please reboot.
To open an Admin command prompt, search Command; when Command Prompt comes up at the top of the search, right-click and select Run as administrator.

Okay. I've found a driver from Realtek for the 8168 here:
    Realtek
You'd have to download that on your friend's system and move it over to your system.

Ah thank you very much. So I just download that top option in the table linked, stick it on a Usb then pop it on mine?
