I just have system restore points that I roll back to, don't actually have anything backed up which I agree is a bit risky and I think after this I'll definitely be buying an external for backup. Os drive is 1Tb and is currently about 600gb full.
Yes, I would recommend getting a 2TB or larger external drive (preferably Seagate) to use for Macrium images. I would also get it sooner rather than later.

I'll make sure to disable the avast shields before the reboot, I will allow it to happen to see how this all plays out with the new local account and such. Failing that then I'll use your previously linked method to hide the updates.
The new local account shouldn't make any difference as to whether the update installs or not - it's just a safety net I wanted for future work on the system. Disabling the Avast shields *may* help, but I can't guarantee that's the only problem that exists.

I would really like you to try the Show/Hide Updates tool, to see if it will allow you to hide the update BEFORE you reboot, if you can. Tomorrow is ok - I know it's late for you.

I'm just concerned that the restore point(s) may eventually get corrupted, and you'll be stuck.

This will probably not happen until tomorrow considering how long it takes to update and apply the update. Thanks for bearing with me so far, hopefully we can fix this all come tomorrow.
    No problem at all. :)

    Decided to give it a try seeing as I can't turn my computer off until the download for the update finishes anyway. I downloaded the service pack and ran the programme, I then selected hide updates and it is showing me;

    - 3 intel system updates dated 10/03/2016,
    - 1 intel USB update dated 10/03/2016
    - 1 intel driver update for intel(R) Management Engine Interface
    - 1 intel other hardware intel(R) watchdog timer driver (Intel(R) WTD)

Should I select all of them and then click next?

So it's not showing you the KB for the upgrade....then it's not gonna work until you reboot.
No, don't select any of them; it's not going to help, I don't think.

I can get you a code to force a shutdown without installing - hold on.......

Open an admin command prompt and type
    Code:
    shutdown /s /t 0
Copy and paste it from here directly into the Command window, so it captures the correct spacing.
    Press enter.
I believe this will shut it down completely without installing the update.

Thanks very much for getting that for me. The update is on 94% at the moment though, do you recommend going through with forcing the shutdown or do you think allowing it to finish and running the WUshowhide programme again would be better? I'm willing to stay awake for it considering only 6% is left if you would rather we do that.

If it's installing now, DO NOT stop it!
Don't forget - 6% on the shutdown side, then it boots up and has a lot more to do.

But, if you can get it installed this time, because Avast shields have been disabled, that is good progress.

If it boots up and you can get into a user account, and you find things are not working properly, we can try the Show/Hide update tool then (seems the update has to be installed in order to hide it - that didn't used to be the case, I believe).

I still think you are able to set a wired connection to metered....don't have one to try.

Right that's the update fully installed again.

So as normal I am locked out of main account as it asks for password but refuses every entry as It won't connect me to internet.

Got into the local account fine, it also has no internet but at least I can enter it to try some fixes.

I have a cmd prompt to reset the IP if maybe you think that could work.

Also if it helps I ran a troubleshoot and I believe it said something about a network driver.

In bed now so can't try any fixes until morning so I'll give any advice you leave a try first thing.

And thanks for the info on a metered connection with Ethernet, don't know how i missed that.

That option was added to Settings in build 14986, so that means it's in Creators Update (1703) or later. For Anniversary Update (1607) or earlier the registry method is the only one available. But as both methods change the same registry settings it a safe registry change to make.

    OPTION ONE

To Set Ethernet Connection as Metered or Non-Metered in Settings
    Note
This option is only available starting with Windows 10 build 14986.

    Thanks Bree, for that info.

Jordan333: your results appear to confirm one suspicion: the existing user account has become corrupted. I'm glad we have the second account to work from.

First, I need to go over some things:

Please fill in your system specs as best you can.
Type system in the search box, and select System information.
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums Site Use Tutorials

    Please answer the following:
    1. Do you have all your data backed up somewhere offline?
    2. When do you think you'll be able to get an external drive for imaging?
    3. Is this system a clean install of W10, or an upgrade from W7/W8?
    4. Have you checked your OEM or Motherboard manufacturer for BIOS/Chipset/Network updates? (I can't do it, as there's not enough info in your computer specs)
    5. Do you have any "bangs" on anything in Device Manager now that the update has been installed? (Specifically check Network adapters.)
    6. Please provide the make/model of network adapter in the system.
    7. I'm guessing you have access to another internet-connected device so that you can read and answer this thread while your computer is offline. Is it another computer, which can be used to download things, or is it a phone? Are you able to download things on another device and transfer them over to the computer?

To determine if you use an MSA to login, tell me this: at the login screen, is the password for the existing account the same password you would use to login to your Microsoft account in a web browser? If so, then you are using an MSA to login, and it would not be possible to simply remove the password - the entire account would have to be changed to a Local Account. (We're not going to do this though.)

I'd feel much better if we could make a system image with Macrium before going further, but, here goes:

The first things I'd like you to do to the system when you wake are:
Run winver again and post the results.

    Turn off Fast Startup
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Shut the system down completely (not a restart).
Turn it back on and enter into the new account; let it completely boot and sit for a while until the HDD activity calms down (You can view that in Task Manager).

For the NIC: If it's still not online at this point, you can try 2 things: 1). run the network troubleshooter (type troubleshoot into the search bar in Settings), and then 2). In Device Manager, see if you have an option to rollback the network driver.

NOTE: Remember, the minute you get internet access again, be sure to set your connection to metered!

    Turn on System Restore
Turn On or Off System Protection for Drives in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Set TWO restore points (one for redundancy). Note: doing this will likely remove any restore points which allowed you to rollback to v1607. If you think this will be a problem, then don't do it. In other words, if you must get this system online in order to download things we need to continue working, then we are going to have to use the WUShow/Hide tool and get you back to v1607. If this is the case, stop here and do not turn on System Restore.

If you are going to continue:
Uninstall Avast Free and MBAM Free.

Open an Admin Command Prompt and enter
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
Let it run to completion. We are looking for "No Integrity Violations Found". If it finds any problems - whether it says they have been fixed or not - run it again, up to 3 times, with reboots in-between.

If you cannot get the all-clear, we'll move on to other things. I suspect you are 5 hours ahead of me. See you in the morning.
