Great news. I'm glad it could help. :)
Was just coming back to report that a restart did the trick, thanks. And the Quick Access icon is indeed gone so there's that. May I just say, though, that I truly, deeply, and most heartfeltedly (is SO a word!) detest Windows 10 and wish it would die screaming in flames? Thanks, I needed to just say that.
Thank you, Brink.
Worked for me too.
I know this is an old thread, but this unwelcome and difficult-to-delete "Quick Access" just appeared on my desktop.
In my case, it happened immediately after installing Ghostscript for a pdf printer driver issue. However I am not convinced that it is not tied to a Windows update that also may have just occurred because I had updates disabled but was playing with those update settings in trying to solve my printer issue.
The real point of my post is to point to another thread (on a different site) that solved this issue for several people and for myself. In my case the simply option to uncheck "Use Sharing Wizard" on Explorer --> View options did the trick without having to try any of the registry edits. Hoping this is not against forum rules, here is the link:
windows 10 - Get rid of new "Quick Access" desktop icon (Win10-AU) - Super User
I already removed Quick Access from File Explorer using the Registry tweak some time ago. Then earlier today I downloaded a screen recorder and tried installing it. This had reactivated the Quick Access folder in the Explorer pane and added an icon to my desktop that could not be deleted. I checked the Registry and the disabling code was in there. I restarted my computer and both the Quick Access folder in Explorer and the desktop icon were gone. So, I would say that the reason the icon seems to randomly appear is that it isnt random and is the result of downloading or installing something onto your PC that includes a Quick Access component in its package.
