... and here we go, explorer has crashed and I am typing this with all the black screen stuff and already-running programs none the wiser. It crashed while I was watching a movie in VLC with full screen and now I remember that the most recent times it crashed mostly with VLC in full screen or while I was playing a game with heavy graphics. So is this driver related? This is the first time it has crashed after several days.

Yep, been trying to do exactly that for at least 3 hours now and it does not let me keep my apps and settings. "Nothing" is the only option available. I have tried using the DVD I had, downloading different ISOs from MS and all of them have the same issue.

Are you sure you are doing repair install of Windows 10 with correct Windows 10 edition, bit version and language.

I think I am, but from studying the issue it might be the many changes I made to the registry (none would cause crashes, they're just simple keys like for creating crashdumps), that might be causing the whole mismatch between versions or "unsupported directory" <- this one I just cannot understand how it even makes any sense. Windows is installed in C:\Windows and the error makes it sound like people just randomly change the directory, as if they have a choice.

I don't think I have any other option except to do a fresh install, unless some of you gents are able to figure out something. But it looks bleak.

EDIT: I downloaded whatever latest ISO I could find on the internet (unofficial) and for some bizarre reason that is allowing me to keep my files.

When performing the in place upgrade repair you will perform the following steps:
    1) Insert the bootable windows 10 iso into any USB port
    2) Open file explorer and identify the windows 10 iso drive
    3) click on the drive to find setup or setup.exe and launch it
    4) do not click install.
    5) look in the left lower corner and click on repair your computer
    6) follow the text and images in this link:

Whoops, in the hour between my post and your reply I had already launched it (via mounted ISO, nothing physical) and did the repair installation (via "upgrade" option in setup.exe).

The attachment is giving an invalid attachment message from tenforums.

    Spotlight still ain't working o_O

In the Panther\setupact.log file there's a bunch of stuff like this:

2018-01-19 10:23:16, Info MIG Object C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-GB\explorer.exe.mui is excluded from migration because it is a system object.
2018-01-19 10:23:16, Info MIG Object C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-GB\explorerframe.dll.mui is excluded from migration because it is a system object.

... which hints to me that nothing was repaired in whatever was wrong in the explorer module and its dependencies.

Please instruct where to extract the files, how to run since there's no exe for a straightforward execution.

See this webpage: BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums
It should run automatically with your approval.
A folder should appear on the desktop.
Zip it and post it into the thread.

Open both versions. The beta version is preferred.
