Check out this tutorial on SevenForums:

I'm not sure if it still works in W10 (I'd have to boot up W10 to find out).
Yes, it works in 10, but it isn't what you think it means. The 'translucent rectangle' is the box that appears when you click-and drag on the desktop to select multiple items. It becomes a dotted outline instead of a colored box if you turn it off. It has no effect on the 'rotten rectangles' - they're still there even if you turn off all visual effects.

I've unticked the bit in the performance options/visual effects, plus did the regedit in Shawn's tutorial but the listviewalpha is already 0.
Guess I just gotta live with it. Oh for the good ol' days.....XP......W7
Thanks for your input guys :)

If nothing, it's less pronounced on W10. With a wrong setting and theme + background color, on XP they would become unreadable.

    My bad.

    I see this in XP:

When you select something there needs to be some way to show you what you've selected.
That's what those "rotten rectangles" are for.
I don't have any "rotten rectangles". Here's what I get if I click once on an icon on the desktop (see the Recycle Bin icon):

The faint "haze" disappears after I double-click on the icon, when the file then opens.

    Hi there.

I think the translucent square around desktop icon when your mouse hovers over it is pretty standard on OS'es these days -- same in Linux. It's only there while the mouse has focus.

If you don't like those simply move the desktop icons to the taskbar and run from the task bar. You will still get a translucent box around an executing application that's active such as file download from IE when your mouse hovers over the task bar.

    Cheers

In my setup (standard, I don't remember making any setting on this), after single clicking on a desktop icon, the hazy rectangle remains when I move the mouse elsewhere on the desktop (without any further clicking).

We have to remember that from Windows 7 the OS has been Optimised for touch - This is visible in the default Icon size and the use of transparency to indicate selections on the desktop - It's here to stay so you may as well get used to it.

We've travelled long way from the awful Luna interface on windows 6.1, (AKA XP), but at least you could turn it off, (though I expect Walt Disney still got royalties)
