    Hey sturpe,
In File Explorer > Address Bar ... If you manually type in C:\Users\Username\Desktop ... does it popup an error ... windows can't find 'C:\Users\Username\Desktop' check spelling and try again ???
Now that is interesting. If I do what you suggest, File Explorer Address bar changes to C:\Users\username\documents and the missing ICONS are there. But there is still not a "Desktop" folder.

Is this a step in the right direction?

Hmmm, that's a bit strange and i'm not sure what to make of it.

Edit: I'm wondering if the Desktop folder got merged with Documents folder. If it did, I don't think you can un-merge them. You may have to just create a new C:\Users\Username\Desktop folder

Hmmm, I wonder if you can use Restore Previous Version for files/folders on the Documents folder. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me, can comment on it ???

Finally solved. When I tried to create a folder (C:\users\username\Desktop) I got the message that it already existed. Did I want to replace it. The first time I said no and looked again for a "Desktop" folder. No joy. So the second time I said to replace it and it came up with "Documents" which had the icons in it, same as before. So I renamed the "Documents" folder to Desktop and now all is right. That folder only had the files and folders that have the desktop data in it!

Looks like you figured it out, for anyone else. Right click any icon on your Desktop and choose Properties What does the Location Path say? (ie) C:\Users\[YourUserName]\Desktop

I wonder if the version of windows might play a part. I have windows 10 home. Under c:\users\username\desktop I have 1 folder and 3 shortcut apps that I added. Under users\public\public desktop there are 11 other apps and shortcuts. Default\desktop is empty. The only one not listed in any user account is recycle bin.

The Default User profile is used if your user name profile does not load. Windows will load a Default profile so you can login and try to repair your profile and create a new one. The Default profile will not have anything but the Default files in it and you cannot save files, nor should you to the Default Profile.
Under your User Name any Icons that are for installed All Users will not show up under your Desktop folder unless they are in the Public/Desktop folder
