Is there a windows 10 setting that changes the default action when a file by the same name replaces it? Currently my PC appends (1) or (2) etc which causes me to have to do a lot of extra steps.
When you copy a file to a location with the same file name A dialog box listing duplicate file names will appear asking you if you want to save the existing file or the newer one. If you select both files (existing + new one), windows will save both by adding a suffix number to the newer file.
What @spunk posted is correct. However, @rtischer8277, what you posted looks like what happens when you download a file (app, song, pic, etc.) to your default Download folder (usually C:\Users\{user name}\Downloads) and that file already exists. The system will append (1), (2), (3) to distinguish it from the original or any other duplicates. I don't know of any way to change that behavior, perhaps someone else does.
Actually, the appending behavior occurs regardless of which directory the file lands in. Perhaps this is a new "feature". The old behavior let you decide and was customary for any SaveAs action. I know that the behavior is customizable when programming the SaveAs feature, so why can't it be set using the GUI?
