OK this is odd then. I never once had Windows 7 clear out this folder on multiple computers..

Now I have two Windows 10's (a surface and a Dell inspiron laptop) and it does it on both. So I am imagining there is a default setting that is triggering this.

As an aside there should be a process which is doing it (since it is not happening in real time: only periodically), and one would think this would be listed in the event log. But it does not seem that anyone wants to answer what process that is (not just "windows does this")

Again, I am not looking for additional ways to clean things!!!

I would like to know what process is doing the deleting. If it is not too much to ask, if people could address that I would appreciate it.

Because it is hard to tell, I would love to know, but we can only guess, the deletion is most likely based on the date the file was created. Your request is unique and unusual, so it is hard to address, I remove temp folders with CCleaner every day. As mentioned, you could try to disable automatic maintenance, but there are MS tasks, which might be involved too.

You asked what would delete files in the %Temp% folder, and that is exactly what the others are trying to tell you.

In addition to what the others posted, apps themselves will often cleanup their own files in the %Temp% folder when done working.

There is not just one process that deletes files in the %Temp% folder since it is a working directory used by just about everything.

I don't know if this would make a difference or not on the OP's particular folder; but maybe he could untick some of these check boxes?

Thanks EyeInTheSky: that is exactly the kind of suggestion I was looking for!

Alas I have already turned off Storage Sense so that is not the source of deletions on my PC

Windows components can delete their temp files whenever they wish. The same for applications. This may happen at times other than expected. The activities of Storage sense are in addition to this.

Edit: The temp folders are for the exclusive use of Windows and applications. They are not for user usage.

zbook when I open DiskClean I do not have options like you said. I get this:
Prevent Windows 10 from emptying %temp%-capture.png

On the next screen "Temporary Files" (which is the folder I am interested in) is unchecked.
