This guy claims to have solved both desktop icons rearranging and explorer view settings changing unexpectedly:
Windows 7 X64 Auto Arrange Desktop Problem Solved
    by removing a reg entry..

Anyone care to try it out- with due precautions (restore point/export existing key...)?

Yeah tried it long ago but there is no such reg entry in the stated path. Its actualy zero access virus that breaks desktop icons arrangement but we don't have such virus in our pc either.

I have also tried comparing os reg of working folder view and non working folder view settings but didn't found anything special. Apart from shell bags which doesn't help.

Same problem here with one of our Windows 10 PRO computers at work. Reboot and all the desktop icons move over to the right and where I had unchecked align icons to grid, is not back checked again. I also had small icons and they come back as medium icons.

I have Eset NOD32 AV (64 bit edition) , running Windows 10 pro, also I run Classic Shell on 3 computers at the winery. All have that same AV but only one of them has the issue with desktop icons going to the left after reboot. So don't think it's attributed to ESET unless there is some setting in the AV that is different from the other 2 computers.

People are pointing the finger of blame at Eset Nod32 or Eset Smart Security. Is the affected machine using Eset AV ?

If you guys haven't already tried, sometimes resetting folder views back to default helps with it not being remembered. Of course, you'll have to set your folder views again afterwards.

I'm also having the same problem, started 2 days ago, after a reboot the icons get back on the left and are big and in order so pretty much like everybody in this thread, I got ESETNOD32 8.0.319.1 installed 10 days ago, couldn't find any fix..

Mine is. I just added NOD32 and my desktop icons forget where they were and align to left side. View align is unchecked. Actually I have found that I uncheck in the view Align icons to left. When I reboot and find the icons aligned left I see that the check mark reappears in align left.

Hi, if it's any help, these two registry entries change slightly when auto-arrange is changed.

    HKU\S-1-5-21-1874168061-3408090847-1495916866-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count\HRZR_PGYFRFFVBA:

    HKU\S-1-5-21-1874168061-3408090847-1495916866-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count\Q:\Ertvfgel Gbbyf\Ertfubg\Ertfubg 1-9 Havpbqr\Ertfubg-k86-Havpbqr.rkr:

Note: I expect the string S-1-5-21-1874168061-3408090847-1495916866-1001 will differ from PC to PC.
