I have a different error (DX11 could not switch resolution) but it basically the same result.
I have tried everything (older driver, reinstall DirectX / games, etc..) also the newest 388.00 WHQL but it did not help

I tried to create a new Windows profile, and start the game with that, and then game starts ONCE. For the second start attempt it gives "Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution" error.

    Attachment 160150

Note: It affect DX11 games only which cannot be forced to run in DX9 mode (old DX9 games are fine)

Does anyone have any idea how ro resolve this Fall Creators update / Nvidia incompatibility issue?
I was facing same error and I resolved it by turning off Game Bar feature of Windows 10 (Creators Update version)

Turn On or Off Game Bar in Windows 10

Known issues can be caused also by Windows SmartScreen of Windows 10.

You can turn it off by using option 2 of this thread since smartscreen feature is part of Windows Defender Security Center in Creators Update version:

Lets hope these compatibility issues with latest Windows 10 builds will be resolved soon.

Otherwise we will have to turn them off/disable/block them.

Clean installed windows 10 on a new SSD, and using new graphic driver 388.13 WHQL, but no improvement whatsoever. Still starts with black screen in some (but not all) dx11 games. Dx12 and dx9 games all works perfect.

    Ideas??

Have you tried disabling the on-board GPU? Just let the NVidia run?

    DX11-games
Project Cars 2 allways starts with a black screen, I can either install the directx from this games directory just before gamestart, or I can toggle from 144hz to 60hz to 120hz to 144hz again on my monitors button. After a reboot, the directx must be installed again if I don't want to use the button on the monitor.
F1 2017 mostly starts with black screen, but not every time. Using same on my monitor as written above.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands allways works.

DX12 games works every timeForza 7 DEMO
    Forza 6
    Civilization 6
    Battlefield 1

First off regarding Project Cars 2, you might want to visit this forum - After Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 1709 black screen when starting pC2.

That out the way, I do see that Project Cars 2 is a DirectX 11 game. Also see the other games you list as DX12 are in fact DX12 capable. Just needed to double check these games were in fact supported by the DX mode you stated. I also see your 980ti is DirectX 12 capable.

Anyway as I said before, I really doubt this is a "Windows DX" issue as much as either a game or driver issue, but...

Thanks for the link to PC2, I will read it after this writing :)

And yes, the games I wrote as DX12 IS running DX12 if MSI Afterburner-tool onscreen display can be trusted

Okay. The link from #27 has a solution. I used DDU from guru3d.com to uninstall the new drivers and their settings, then installed the recommended driver from the link for Nvidia 385.69 WHQL, and VOILA PC2 is starting perfect, and after 10 starts attemps F1 2017 also starts perfect every time.
So something in the newer drivers and Fall Creator don't like some dx11 games. I used 387.92 WHQL before updating to Falls Creator, and then it worked, but not AFTER the windows 10 update.

Windows 10 pro Fall Creator and Nvidia driver 385.69 = all my gaming starts problems are gone :)
