Which configuration is better for gaming?

i7 7700
gtx 1050
12 gb ddr4 ram

#2:

i5 7300HQ
gtx 1060
8 gb ddr4 ram

and why?

I assume that's an I7 7700K (overclockable). It's a great CPU. Look for yourself at the performance difference:

But I would not put a GTX 1050 in that #1 setup. Is that a 2 GB Vram card? If yes, total mismatch for that system and I wouldn't touch it.

Take a look at some of the gaming videos I posted with on screen display showing. Although I use Ultra settings, I only run at 1080P resolution. With that you will see games often using just over 4 GB of Vram and just over 8 GB of system ram. My minimum comfort zone for decent game play and some future proof would be that 12 GB of system ram, with a GTX 1060-1070 with 6 GB of Vram.

Personally, I would opt for a Core i5-7600k and either a GeForce GTX1060 with 6GB or a GTX 1070.

The Core i5-7600k is one of the best bang for the buck gaming processors on the market right now.

While the i5 may be the better bang for the buck, the more powerful system is the i7 (#1) even with the slower GPU).

Also be aware the i5-7300HQ is a laptop processor while the i7-7700 is a full fledged desktop processor thus you're doing an apples to oranges comparison. Also the i7-7700 is a more powerful processor.

Another vote for the i5. If your on a budget, it's a great way to go. It's more than capable for playing the latest games. Save some money and use it on a better graphics card.

What if I get #2 configuration but replace the i5 7300HQ with an i5 6400? Does this sound better?

It sounds more realistic. If you get a higher end component and then cheap out on the other components, you'll get bottlenecks. I would agree that the 6400 is a better option in line with the rest of the items.

Yea they seem to complement each other well in most games. What about CPU intensive games? Should I expect massive fps drops with the i5 6400?

You should lower your expectations in mid range hardware. If you are struggling with cpu intensive games then lower the games settings accordingly.

You could see if there are any game benchmarks on youtube for that particular cpu.
